Story
My darling little boy Albie adores playing at our new neighbours’ house. And after the terrible year we’ve had, I feel so lucky that we can start over in this perfect place, with new friends who treat Albie like the son they never had. He can’t stop talking about the tree house they’re building him, and the cookies they bake together. But as time passes, something starts to feel wrong. Why don’t they ever open the front door more than a crack? They told me they had no children so who does the small pink tricycle I saw in their hall belong to?

Story
When single mother Darcy’s son falls from a rope bridge at a local playground, life stands still. She clutches his small, limp body, frozen, until a pair of strong hands push her aside, and she watches as George, a local doctor, saves her son’s life. George, with his twinkling hazel eyes, easy charm and lack of wedding band is almost too good to be true, but coffee becomes lunch, lunch becomes dinner, and soon they can’t go an evening without seeing each other.

Story
When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia. But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.

I haven’t lived here long. The house is small and a little run-down, but each piece of faded floral wallpaper I peel away feels like unwrapping the second chance I never thought I’d get. Our new home was meant to be a chance for us to start again; to make new friends and forget the past. And as I look around the barbeque we’ve thrown for our neighbors, I dare to dream that things will be all right. I watch my husband joking as he flips burgers and my daughter turning cartwheels on our sun-bleached lawn. And then my gaze falls on my son, Jacob, and his new girlfriend, Rose, in her light blue jeans and her green crop top. There is a worried expression clouding her beautiful eyes.... The next day I get a call from Rose’s mother that chills me to the bone.

Publisher's Summary
My husband’s dead. She’s at my door. She owns my home...
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her buttery blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms.
As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts.
She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I know this will be hard to hear. But I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'
My world implodes. And then she tells me that she owns our home – and that she’s not going anywhere...
An utterly gripping psychological thriller from the number one bestselling author of The Marriage. If you like Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train and Lisa Jewell then you will be hooked by The Girlfriend.

Just ok
This is a book and a story that has nothing special at all. Just another story of treason where the wife is betrayed, the husband is an idiot and the mistress is crazy.
The narration is good except for the English accent that I couldn-t understand very well at times,

It was okay
The narrator’s child voice was horrible! Like nails on a chalkboard. The story was okay… certainly some hard to believe parts. Too bad the husband died so close to the beginning because hearing more about his juggling would’ve been fun. I never did gain empathy for any of the characters. The wife needed a backbone right from the start. Wouldn’t recommend.

Uh, what?
Really far fetched. The main character is so dumb and unbelievably irritating I found myself on team girlfriend. Who in this age does not have a lawyer?!
And the kids…ick. Both were evil and unlikeable. Maybe that was the author’s intention. Birds of a feather. Author needs a sequel with both Miller and Sylvie growing up to be serial killers.
I do like the author’s writing. I think she is a good writer. I tend to be critical of unrealistic story lines and gaping plot holes.

One of my favorites so far
I've listened to a lot of K.L. Slater's books, and while they've all been good, this was next level with twists. I love it when the bad guy isn't easily spotted, and this story had multiple layers of intrigue. It was an enjoyable story overall.

Twisted and frustrating
I wonder how many women would give in in this situation. I think the plot gave the main character a weak character driven by fear. The girlfriend has a lot of nerve! I would absolutely not give in to her demands; More avenues seemed open to the wife. In the end, it was entertaining but frustrating.

So disappointed by this ending. Why are so many female writers putting these bizarre, unlikely twists into the stories that only wind up changing the reader’s overall feeling about the story. Truly disappointing.
