What the critics say

"Due handles the potentially unwieldy elements of her novel with confidence, cross-cutting smoothly from past to present, introducing revelatory facts that alter the interpretation of earlier scenes and interjecting powerfully orchestrated moments of supernatural horror that sustain the tale's momentum....[Due is] a writer who grows better with each book." Great story and narration. Not scary, but, do not let that stop you.

I had expectations going in that The Good House was a scary story and yes, I am aware that expectations are really premeditated resentments. So, as I listened in anticipation, I allowed my unmet expectations to nearly ruined the story and I considered returning it; I am glad I did not.

The trouble with The Good House was that I could not help but wonder what was going to happen next so, I got over myself and settled in. With this frame of mind I could appreciate the vastness of this story. There is a lot happening, different timelines, different timelines for characters of primary the timeline, yet it all held fast, easy to follow. From my layman’s perspective, pulling that off well can not be easy, but Tananarive Due did an excellent job.

Dull

Found it boring and so long winded about nothing in particular. Could not finish the book. Expected more.

unexpected

I'm not sure about this one. I think, objectively, it was pretty good. The writing was solid, the plotting was tight, it was ~literary~... But I feel like it was kind of... thin, maybe? Also, wow, there was a lot of sex. Like, it wasn't Richard Laymon style (thank goodness- that stuff is straight up unreadable) but it was still a lot, like, somewhere between cozy mystery and romance novel level? I wasn't expecting it. It's not really my thing, so I didn't appreciate it, but that's just me.
I did really love the happy ending, though. So satisfying.

Cool story of Voodoo and secrecy

This is a clever tale. It isn't really frightening in any way, but explores witchcraft with a good helping of creepy.

Very good performance, though nothing special from Robin Miles.

good

I liked the story and the way it's told, revealing more info as it goes. It was a light read and I enjoyed it. I'm not sure if it is super memorable .
The reader is nice, she had a nice way of changing intonations to reflect different characters. As a native French speaker, she butchers the french and Creole parts a bit but I'll forgive XD

Too boring

Couldn't finish it. Very slow moving. The parts that were, I suspect, .meant to be scary, were just ridiculous and not believable.

A good story

This one was good, narrated well and an interesting story. I would love to know more about the grandmother's life. I hope the author releases prequels and sequels in this series.
