I might be a grandmother. But I’m not some sweet, harmless old lady who people can push around.

Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince.

They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by.

I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Now he wants his daughters back.

Over my dead body.

I finally have a family of my own. And nobody is going to take it away from me.

If you like stories that leave you feeling uncomfortable, and do t care for a tidy ending where loose ends are tied off, you’ll enjoy this one.

I actually really liked the story all along and found the twists and turns compelling until the end when it felt like the author just slapped on a twist from left field which was wholly unsatisfying.

Perhaps there is a sequel I don't know about in which case the cliff-hanger ending would be forgivable….maybe?

Sometimes I take a chance and pick a book from the Plus list when I’m between credits. This was a great find. I couldn’t figure out who of the characters I liked and cheered for. So many twists. Now I’ll look for more from this author. Happy to use credits in future.

First quarter ok, last three quarters bad. 4 murders discovered, many psycho characters. 3 traumatized small kids. Crappy ending. Waste of time.

This Jane E. James story follows a conflict between a ne'er-do-well father trying to clean up his act and a passive-aggressive Grandmother caring for a couple of girls after their mother is murdered.
The vocabulary & prose are capable, the personality exposition is creditable, and the plotting is adequate.. but the book failed to grab my attention. The custody fight just wasn't that interesting & I had trouble building any concern for James's unlikable characters.

As to presentation: Readers Anna Cordell + Max Dinnen are professional when considering diction, timbre, and cadence - and faithful to the author's characterization & inner dialogue - but over-the-top in emotiveness and occasionally cartoonish in voice-acting. The overall result of their efforts is a subpar Audible Studios Inc. production.

Altogether, 'The Grandmother' merits 5 stars out of 10.. not terrible if you can get it for free, but not worth a Credit should they ask for one.

I loved the voice actor for the grand mother, but the voice actor for the father fit the father well but not any of the other characters. I didn't feel like there was a good conclusion and it ended on a cliff hanger. The story reminded me a lot of the story; the Grimm Sisters but much darker which I quite enjoy, the thing that mainly reminded me of the Grimm sisters was the fact was the girls and their relationship with eachother and with their grandmother.

For parents who are wondering this was written by an eleven year old.

It's an interesting story but all I can think at the end is that poor poor family.

There are some decent plot twists. The ending needs a little more to fill out the last twist.
