Publisher's Summary

It is 1943, the third summer of the new war between the Confederate States of America and the United States, a war that will turn on the deeds of ordinary soldiers, extraordinary heroes, and a colorful cast of spies, politicians, rebels, and everyday citizens. The CSA president, Jake Featherston, seems to have greatly miscalculated the North's resilience. But as new demonic tools of killing are unleashed, secret wars are unfolding.

The US government in Philadelphia has proof that the tyrannical Featherston is murdering African Americans by the tens of thousands in a Texas gulag called Determination. And the leaders of both sides know full well that the world's next great power will not be the one with the biggest army but the nation that wins the race against nature and science - and smashes open the power of the atom.

Paul Costanzo sucks

Honestly, the narrator, Paul Constanzo, is one of the worst narrators for this series.

Constanzo seems to have a thick New York accent and mercilessly butchers any character that is not from New York. For example, Jake Featherston sounds like a flat and monotone when he is clearly a central character from the Southern States.

Another examples are he does not seem to understand that French and German names have proper names. Constanzo just attempts to Anglocize it and fails miserably.

It can be rather grating to listen to him and it’s a huge disservice that such a brilliant set of books is narrated by such a terrible narrator.

Finally, it’s a disgrace that George Guidall did not narrate the rest of the series. A very very big disappointment overall as the plot, politics and world building is amazing otherwise.
