"The audiobook narrated by Liam Gerrard perfectly captures Celehar’s voice."—Buzzfeed on The Grief of Stones

In The Grief of Stones, Katherine Addison returns to the world of The Goblin Emperor with a direct sequel to The Witness For The Dead...

Celehar’s life as the Witness for the Dead of Amalo grows less isolated as his circle of friends grows larger. He has been given an apprentice to teach, and he has stumbled over a scandal of the city—the foundling girls. Orphans with no family to claim them and no funds to buy an apprenticeship. Foundling boys go to the Prelacies; foundling girls are sold into service, or worse.

At once touching and shattering, Celehar’s witnessing for one of these girls will lead him into the depths of his own losses.

The love of his friends will lead him out again.

very interesting narrative

You can tell that Katherine has established her favourite character in her universe by now. He's a sort of more humble Columbo who can show his weaknesses.
The story progresses at a pace that isn't fixed for prescribed like a typical three act structure. We get different stories and interactions, with his work interjecting along the way.
I'm not saying the story is perfect, but it is a nice change of pace from what I usually expect a story to do. It's also nice to see a protagonist who's also blindsided by surprises that aren't simply a writer hand waiving and pretending there's a "gotcha" moment to the audience with something they couldn't expect or didn't have any hints along the way.
