The Guermantes Way is the third of seven volumes. The narrator penetrates the inner sanctum of Paris high society and falls in love with the fascinating Duchesse de Guermantes. Slow and poetic, it feels like a lullaby. It’s hard to focus on the hours and hours of character sketches with no chapter or section divisions. There’s really no plot or moral, it’s just 28 hours of storytelling - highbrows doing both scandalous and mundane things. Upper class France from the turn of the 19th century. But somehow it’s nice to fall asleep to at night.
