Publisher's Summary
A former Medal of Valor winner, Minnesota detective Alexander Rupert is now under subpoena by a grand jury on suspicion of corruption. So when he's asked to look into the false identity of a car-accident victim named James Putnam, a man who in fact died 15 years earlier, Rupert sees a potentially big case and an opportunity to regain his respectability.
But the investigation puts him in the path of "the Beast", the nom de guerre of Drago Basta, a cunning veteran of the Balkan wars and a sociopath assassin who has been searching for Putnam for years. Putnam had something that Basta still wants. If Rupert's life was in shambles before, it's now also in danger. Threatened by the Beast and suspecting his wife of cheating, Rupert falls for the seductions of the dead man's former girlfriend. As he feels his life spinning out of control, his steadfast brother and fellow police detective Max may be Rupert's last hope.

I'm Hooked
Another great book! I'm loving these characters and their stories. Can't wait to start the next book! 👍🏾

Enjoyed the story
This series is not bad. Unfortunately the narrator's voice and attempt at different character voices was painfully off putting for this book. I almost gave up.

Sharp quality drop from the first book in the series
I wouldn't say I disliked the book. It just didn't measure up to "The Life We Bury", the first book in the Joe Talbert series. It's always a gamble move when the author decides to write the story from both the hero and the villain's point of view since both characters need to be enticing and likable enough to keep the reader engaged. Unfortunately Allen Eskens couldn't deliver on that front and although the story is fast paced, it lacks the sense of credibility and authenticity that defined the first entry in the series.
But my biggest disappointment by far is the choice of the narrator. Narration makes or breaks an audiobook. The narrator here has a tepid pace, struggles with female characters, assigning a uniform high pitched voice. He sounds more like a retired 80 year old professor than a police detective. And that was a serious mood killer.
This is what B movies are made of. Mildly fun but forgettable stories.

Grating Narrator
Story was fine. Narration was just plain bad, especially the women’s breathy voices. Almost quit several times.

Terrific!
Another terrific work by Esken!
This one was more violent and the author tried to add some humour to the dialogues but the storyline was gripping and very well executed.
The last 20% was riveting and I loved the conclusion.

Could not stop listening!
It took me a bit longer than the first book to really get into the character and story of it all but the minute that chase starts.... wow! What a great read. Only thing I wish was done better was the narration. His accent and character voices were pretty awful in my opinion, it could have been done better.

Good Thriller
The story line was very good. A but was predictable, but some good twists. I disliked the narration. The voices for the females were horrible. Made it hard to develop any feeling for those characters.

Where did this narrator audition? Off-off Broadway?
The story was quite good, but dude reads it like he’s incredulous to all of it. People just don’t talk like that. The constant intonation is GRATING. You might not have a face for radio, but you certainly don’t have a voice for audiobooks.

Not a bad plot, but twists were lacking a bit
It seemed a little lean on the suspense side. Liked some of his other books better
