Publisher's Summary

From the #1 Amazon Charts best-selling author of Daughters of the Lake comes an enthralling spellbinder of love, death, and a woman on the edge.

After a devastating loss, Brynn Wilder escapes to Wharton, a tourist town on Lake Superior, to reset. Checking into a quaint boardinghouse for the summer, she hopes to put her life into perspective. In her fellow lodgers, she finds a friendly company of strangers: the frail Alice, cared for by a married couple with a heartbreaking story of their own; LuAnn, the eccentric and lovable owner of the inn; and Dominic, an unsettlingly handsome man inked from head to toe in mesmerizing tattoos.

But in this inviting refuge, where a century of souls has passed, a mystery begins to swirl. Alice knows things about Brynn, about all of them, that she shouldn’t. Bad dreams and night whispers lure Brynn to a shuttered room at the end of the hall, a room still heavy with a recent death. And now she’s become irresistibly drawn to Dominic - even in the shadow of rumors that wherever he goes, suspicious death follows.

In this chilling season of love, transformation, and fear, something is calling for Brynn. To settle her past, she may have no choice but to answer.

Decent yet boring story, not so decent narration

The story itself has an interesting premise but a slow pace. The setup slowly rises but stalls out and doesn't build to much, missing it's potential. Any hope for a surprise or twist fizzles as the book tapers off into an ending that was predicted a third of the way through. The author reuses some terms several times, which I think of as a person's new favorite saying phase, it always seems unimaginative to me though. Unless everyone in this town is constantly furrowing their brows. It seems as though a lot of inspiration was drawn from the song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". While the quotes were fun, a bit more research on the area and of Lake Superior would have helped.

I was expecting more horror and less romance, it doesn't really fit the books which led to it's recommendation.

What is a disappointment is the narrator. Xe Sands has good timing, can't hear her breathing, BUT she slurs some words and unfortunately sounds like a much older lady which makes the characters seem quite old, older than they should. It's sort of confusing to hear the thoughts and speech of a thirty-something year old sounding more like 65 and with little differentiation from senior characters. Every male character has the drawl of someone from the southern states, even those from the great lakes area. It's very unfortunate, but her lack of range detracts from the enjoyment of an otherwise interesting book.

Sadly this ended up being quite boring and I probably won't bother with other titles from this author or narrator.

not for me

Nothing happens, silly "plot twist" and an absolutely awful narrator. I was disappointed, because I've read a few of her other books and thought they were alright, but this was a miss,
