Publisher's Summary

Still grieving the death of her husband, Lauren leaves the hubbub of Boston for the peaceful shores of Cape Cod, where she hopes to come to terms with her loss and devote herself to her writing. Historic Holland House, isolated on a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, seems like the perfect refuge, until Lauren discovers that she’s not alone, and her ghostly roommate might be none other than Sophie Holland, the mysterious first mistress of the house.

With the help of a handsome doctor with an interest in local history, Lauren is soon drawn out of her self-imposed exile as she sets out to learn what happened to Sophie and stumbles onto a story worth writing about.

Overly Sad and depressing

I kept hoping it would get better as it got further into the story, it did not. The historical heroine is plagued by tragedy and unhappiness. Too much so even for the times. I found myself skipping forward through the ridiculously long, tragic descriptions of her circumstances. The modern heroine is likeable, but the author tries too hard to make her mysterious and stretch out her situation longer than is needed. And finally, then ending is somewhat abrupt and unsatisfying. I wanted to like this book, but I really just suffered through it. The narrator was very good and I would enjoy hearing more of her work.

Enjoyed

I enjoyed this book very much. Wonderful love story. Narration of Ryan and Loren could have been smoother. I found it a bit choppy and short. I would definitely recommend this book.

WOW! I LOVED it! MAKE A SEQUEL!

I am a huge fan of Irina Shapiro's work. I highly recommend The Wonderland Series, Echoes from the Past series, Precious Bones, the Inheritance, etc. This book captured my attention from start to finish. I loved the narrator and the characters. The adept way that Ms. Shapiro weaves the past and present story lines keep me interest and engaged. I also looooovvveeee a good ghost story and this one was so heartfelt!!! I would love to see a second edition to this book where I could find out what happens with Lauren's future and to Sophie's children. I don't want to give any spoilers! -Amanda Parks

I loved this book!

The book is really good written and has the interesting plot that take you away to the 18th century, that the author shows really well from historical perspective and keep you in suspense. I enjoined listening this book.

Timeless love and hope

Another wonderful story by Irina Shapiro who is able to weave two stories together seamlessly and capture the listener and draw them into the tales centuries apart. You feel as if you are there in both time periods through Ms Shapiro’s ability to evoke emotion and a visceral connection to the characters... a must read and enjoy!

House on the Hill

Did NOT enjoy this book! The reading was stilted/ robotic/ like a child just learning to read, especially during the character dialog. no warning of the change from time period so the plot our story was choppy.would not recommend this book!
