About this listen
From the author of Buried Deep comes a brand-new thriller about a summer vacation turned deadly and a group of friends trapped together until they can determine who among them is capable of murder.
Every year, Caroline Reed takes a trip with her best friend, Esme Lamont. They’re usually accompanied by their spouses - but this year, everything’s changed.
Esme has just gone through a bitter divorce, and Caroline is wondering if her own marriage is reaching its breaking point as she and her husband, John, cope with the discovery that their 19-year-old son has been abusing drugs. Still, the inseparable duo books a weeklong stay at a beach-front home in Shoreham, Florida, inviting Esme’s brother, Nick, and his new husband, Ford, in hopes that the additional guests will help lighten the mood.
After a blissful first night in the vacation home, tragedy strikes, and one of the houseguests is found dead. While it’s assumed at first to be a horrific accident, it quickly becomes clear that there’s something more sinister at play, and over the course of this fast-paced, deeply chilling novella, the potential motives of each guest are revealed - until a shocking conclusion is reached.

Fun little whodunit
A fun listen. The reading performance was dull in parts but got better as the story went on.

Great little murder mystery!
The House on the Water, written by Margot Hunt, and narrated wonderfully by Taylor Schilling, was a great little murder mystery with well-rounded characters set in the idyllic seaside of a Florida beach house. But that idyll ends overnight with the death of one of the characters, unmasking all kinds of lies. I have to say I was surprised, but looking back, I understood. Highly recommended, and the best of Margot Hunt's books I've read!

Another good short!
I really do enjoy Margot Hunt's fiction, and her novellas don't suffer from their abbreviated format. She's adept at story arc, and quite outstanding at thorough character development. The House on the Water takes place over a 24-hour period, and does everything a thriller should do for the reader. I only guessed at the identity of the murderer in the last 10 or so minutes, just before the big reveal. Nicely done! Anyone reading this, if you haven't already read For Better And Worse, pick it up. It fits quite happily in my top 20 suspense novels of the past 5 years.
