Publisher's Summary

A riveting new translation of the first installment in the number one internationally best-selling Joona Linna series, The Hypnotist shows the lengths one determined detective is willing to go to solve a horrific crime.

A gruesome triple homicide attracts the interest of Detective Joona Linna of the National Crime Police. There's only one surviving witness - the boy whose family was killed before his eyes. The only problem is he's lapsed into a catatonic state.

Desperate for information, Linna enlists trauma expert Dr. Erik Maria Bark, hoping to hypnotize the boy and uncover the secrets locked in his memory. But, scarred by past experiences, Bark has sworn never to use hypnosis again. When the doctor breaks his promise, he triggers a terrifying chain of events that will put all their lives in jeopardy.

Pokemon? Seriously?

I hate to give up on things but this story goes dreadfully sideways with a Pokemon component. Ugh. Otherwise is was okay.

Won’t bother with another by this author

It was just waaaaaay too long and didn’t need to be.
Also, I didn’t find the story line with Josef and with the hypnotized former patients ever came together. This all occurred over a couple of days, and just wasn’t believable that these unrelated events could occur on the same day in someone’s otherwise normal life. IF it was supposed to be because he started hypnotizing again, that makes less sense since Benjamin had developed a relationship with Lydia.
And did I mention it was waaaaaaasy too long? Painfully long.

Gripping and mysterious!

I've read a lot of crime drama novels and this is definitely one of my favorites! I'm also picky about the narrators voice when it comes to audiobooks. This narrators voice didn't annoy me like some do. He did an excellent job with his acting and expressions. I could really imagine the scenes and characters clearly in my head as I listened. if you like Jo Nesbo, Henning Georg Mankell or Stieg Larson you will love his!

Good story

We’ve been audible members for 18 years so this isn’t our first audio book.

The author does a good job of telling the story. It’s the story. There are ways to give you the sense of violence without dragging it out. We bought the book to hear an intelligent mystery novel.

The narrator was excellent. Carried the accents well enough that we would look for him as a narrator again.

Suspenseful!

The Lars Kepler team is so good. I can hardly put their books down. This one was, as always, a good read BUT anytime I’m reading and come across child abuse I have a hard time. Wish they’d stay away from that topic, but it is out there, unfortunately. Overall though I would recommend this book.

Disliked every character

not sure if that was because of the way the narrator voiced them or not. I don't exactly know how to describe what I hqted so much but, the story was written as if it was describing in detail a movie version of the story. I'm sure he might be a good narrator for a different type of story but his voicing of the female characters was sooooo annoying and the main character came off as a whiny prat.
