An expert, story-driven account of how Coinbase won the cryptocurrency game and set itself up to lead the future of banking and blockchain-based trading. This is the story of the people who made Coinbase, per PitchBook, “one of the most valuable startups in the US,” including the stoic, preppy founder and CEO Brian Armstrong and the bitcoin-obsessed former lumberjack Olaf Carlson-Wee, who turned their backs on the first generation of wild-eyed Bitcoin prophets to build something more profound and practical.

Story
When a pseudonymous programmer introduced “a new electronic cash system that’s fully peer-to-peer, with no trusted third party” to a small Online mailing list in 2008, very few paid attention. Ten years later, and against all odds, this upstart autonomous decentralized software offers an unstoppable and globally-accessible hard money alternative to modern central banks. The Bitcoin Standard analyzes the historical context to the rise of Bitcoin, the economic properties that have allowed it to grow quickly, and its likely economic, political, and social implications.

In this fascinating deep dive into the evolution of monetary systems around the globe, Nik Bhatia takes us into the origins of how money has evolved to function in a “layered” manner. Using gold as an example of this term, he traces the layers of this ancient currency from raw mined material, to gold coins, and finally to bank-issued gold certificates. In a groundbreaking manner, Bhatia offers a similar paradigm for the evolution of digital currencies.

We live in an extraordinary time. Technological advances are happening at a rate faster than our ability to understand them, and in a world that moves faster than we can imagine, we cannot afford to stand still. These advances bring efficiency and abundance - and they are profoundly deflationary. Our economic systems were built for a pre-technology era when labor and capital were inextricably linked - an era that counted on growth and inflation and an era where we made money from inefficiency.

Publisher's Summary
Written with the verve of such works as The Big Short, The History of the Future, and The Spider Network, here is the fascinating, true story of the rise of Ethereum, the second-biggest digital asset in the world, the growth of cryptocurrency, and the future of the internet as we know it.
Everyone has heard of Bitcoin, but few know about the second largest cryptocurrency, Ethereum, which has been heralded as the "next internet".
The story of Ethereum begins with Vitalik Buterin, a supremely gifted 19-year-old autodidact who saw the promise of blockchain when the technology was in its earliest stages. He convinced a crack group of coders to join him in his quest to make a super-charged, global computer.
The Infinite Machine introduces Vitalik’s ingenious idea and unfolds Ethereum’s chaotic beginnings. It then explores the brilliant innovation and reckless greed the platform - an infinitely adaptable foundation for experimentation and new applications - has unleashed and the consequences that resulted as the frenzy surrounding it grew: increased regulatory scrutiny, incipient Wall Street interest, and the founding team’s effort to get the Ethereum platform to scale so it can eventually be accessible to the masses.
Financial journalist and cryptocurrency expert Camila Russo details the wild and often hapless adventures of a team of hippy-anarchists, reluctantly led by an ambivalent visionary, and lays out how this new foundation for the internet will spur both transformation and fraud - turning some into millionaires and others into felons - and revolutionize our ideas about money.

Good overview
As someone who's been there through all of this, I could relate to it all and had a hard time not feeling nostalgic or almost tearing up at some of the flashbacks the book took me through. The narrator is okay but has some strange pronunciations (ConensSYS, e-doubleu-a-es-em for eWASM, Is.tan.bul. for Istanbul) and sometimes sounds robotic, but generally very good. I wish this book had been published 6 months later so it could have documented what DeFi had become in the meanwhile, and also the launch of Eth2 phase 0, but maybe a second edition will catch up.
All in all highly recommended historical overview for anyone who wants to know what this Ethereum stuff is all about.

Great for sending me to sleep at night, listening to this is like sitting next to someone at a dinner party drone on. It’s a level one vomit of events: and then they did this, went to this bar, drank these cocktails and now the next chapter: here’s a dude who grow up in Romania blah blah blah. Presumably there are other books which tell this potentially interesting story with Humor, Insight, Pathos etc

Captivating story and Great intro to blockchain
The story is told as a narrative through the lives of various influential participants in the crypto world, and is very captivating. The level of detail in understanding the nuances of how crypto works and how it has miraculously grown so fast, is very well articulated, and Russo gives you just enough to understand the key aspects of blockchain technology without being a tech nerd. I highly recommend this book!

Well researched and informative
4.5 of 5 stars.
Camila Russo has written a highly informative history of the development of Ethereum and the broader world of crypto currencies. Unlike many modern “journalists”, Ms. Russo actually performed the actual research and conducted the interviews to narrate the development of this world changing technology. Told from the perspective of multiple primary participants who are often at odds with one another, The Infinite Machine is an enjoyable read which goes into some of the high level mechanics of Ethereum, Bitcoin and the other crypto currencies which are the next technological paradigm shift.
The narration is solid but a bit monotone at times. It doesn’t detract from the story however. Recommended for investing and crypto enthusiasts.

sensationalist hero worship by parties that have investment in ETH
This book is absolute garbage written by a person who has considerable investment and conflicts of interest tied in with the success of Ethereum. It is sensationalist hero worship which reads more like an ad. This book reads like Kathy Wood writing a book about Tesla.
