there hasn't been an ilona andrews book that I haven't loved and this is no different. Great story and interesting characters that keeps your interest and is very well wrote.

Seriously I can't get enough of this genre. IA crafts the characters beautifully and in a fashion that invites emotional investment.

However, this is not really an original story, extensively borrowing from pre-existing works like Solo Levelling. I realize that some of this genre convention but the similarities are rather stark.

Still there is something to be said of the ability to tell a story "better"... which they did.

This was awesome and I want a whole bunch more. A great take on the portal apocalypse theme. It was awesome to see an older FMC with kids and bills to pay instead of the generic new adult loner male. It did a good job of showing her progression from prey to predator and the shifting mindset to match. Also, badass dog sidekick. Sure it's a pretty typical trope, but it is that for a reason. Worldbuilding is done very well, especially for such a short book. Lots of mystery and background tension as you get just enough to know there's things moving in the background of the world. Finally, the narration is on point. I know this was supposed to be a kind of standalone almost throwaway story, but please genuinely consider going on with this.

Ilona Andrews is always magnificent. Anything they write is incredible. This is no different. You get sucked into the world and just can't get enough. I can't wait to see what happens next and read about more interactions and adventures. Hilary and James performances are top tier.
