Publisher's Summary

The latest installment in the highly acclaimed, internationally bestselling Strike series finds Cormoran and Robin ensnared in another winding, wicked case.

When frantic, disheveled Edie Ledwell appears in the office begging to speak to her, private detective Robin Ellacott doesn’t know quite what to make of the situation. The cocreator of a popular cartoon, The Ink Black Heart, Edie is being persecuted by a mysterious online figure who goes by the pseudonym of Anomie. Edie is desperate to uncover Anomie’s true identity.

Robin decides that the agency can’t help with this—and thinks nothing more of it until a few days later, when she reads the shocking news that Edie has been tasered and then murdered in Highgate Cemetery, the location of The Ink Black Heart.

Robin and her business partner, Cormoran Strike, become drawn into the quest to uncover Anomie’s true identity. But with a complex web of online aliases, business interests and family conflicts to navigate, Strike and Robin find themselves embroiled in a case that stretches their powers of deduction to the limits–and which threatens them in new and horrifying ways...

A gripping, fiendishly clever mystery, The Ink Black Heart is a true tour-de-force.

A Bloated Train Wreck of A Book

To start, I do have to say that Robert Glenister did a fabulous job at narration as usual especially with the repeated use of the word hashtag. He is a master narrator in my humble opinion. But this book was not the best in the series. It's almost too much of a story, if that is possible. It has a bloated feel to it with too many characters and spreads out into too many directions. It felt like a small story that had been taken and stretched out to be something bigger and done without any idea how to make it a cohesive story. I didn't feel that I was given a satisfactory end to the story. It is hard to believe that this came from a 'professional and experienced writer". Ms. Rowling failed, in this attempt, to reach the standard deserved by her readers. I only continued to listen to discover what happened in the next stage of Strike and Robin's relationship. Which I am sure many readers are interested in. I have bookmarked those and will not re-listen to this book in its entirety. I will keep this book since I have started to collect the series. As a side note: Certain words were beeped out of the audio book while other words were not. I don't think that is fair to the audible listener and that maybe Audible should give the listener the choice between two versions. One with the word bleeped out and another with it included. I am able to make my own decisions about what I listen to/read not a corporation. I give this book a 3 out of 5. And, if the gods are merciful , I pray the next book isn't longer.

Only one issue

My ONLY issue with this book was hearing the various usernames read out in full over and over again in what were often rapid exchanges. I'm sure it worked better on the page but even with Robert Glenister's masterful narration, it was painful. Otherwise, the book was up to Rowling's usual high standards. Her characters are all so well rounded and conveyed. The plotting is excellent. The social commentary is pointed, but doesn't bash you over the head. It's enjoyable, thought-provoking stuff. What I've come to expect from this series, and what I look forward to more of.

An epistolary take of chats, tweets

It was a fun read. Very innovative. But with all the Strike and Robin situations we have come to expect and enjoy.

such a great series

I loved that it was long. Never felt like jumping ahead. Enjoyed narration. Now sad because must wait until next one.

Yet another great book in the series

This book was a little different than the ones that have come before as this time the detectives investigated an online mystery. Which meant there was some reading of twitter threads and chats between characters online, this made parts of the book repetitive but that being said, it was still an amazing book and I can’t wait for the next in the series to come out.
Parents this book is not good for children, make sure you listen to it before you let your kid listen to it. Personally I would say no one under the age of 16 should listen to this book as there are portions that are gruesome. But it’s also a good book to teach kids about the dangers of the internet.
Anyways, JK Rowling did a great job as always and I’m really looking forward to the next instatement.

Meh

My least favorite out of the whole series. Not a fan of all the chats on twitter and so forth.

Terrific series!

This instalment could have been grabbed from today’s headlines… gripping and unsettling. The lead characters and their relationship continue to evolve. Overall, time well spent.

I loved it

I was initially thrown off by some of the lengthy twitter and on line narrative but I quickly got used to it and it was worth it! I am just sad it is over and will have to wait for another in this wonderful series (I hope).
This gentleman is the very best narrator - I would probably listen anything he does !
