Publisher's Summary

From James Patterson, the world's number one best-selling author: A young lawyer takes on the judge who is destroying her hometown - and ends up in jail herself.

In picture-perfect Erva, Alabama, the most serious crimes are misdemeanors. Speeding tickets. Shoplifting. Contempt of court.

Then why is the jail so crowded? And why are so few prisoners released? There’s only one place to learn the truth behind these incriminating secrets.

Sometimes the best education a lawyer can get is a short stretch of hard time.

What the critics say

“I couldn’t put down The Jailhouse Lawyer, a page-turning legal thriller that exposes a headline-making crisis in the American courts: the new debtors’ prisons, where an inability to pay court costs sentences poor people to jail, with devastating consequences.” (Tony Messenger, Pulitzer Prize winning columnist, author of Profit and Punishment: How America Criminalizes the Poor in the Name of Justice)

Amazing book

I have no dislikes for this book. It is one of the best books I have heard on audible. I highly recommend to all. James Patterson has out done his self on this book. I 100% highly recommending everyone to read or listen to The Jailhouse Lawyer.
The narrator was great to listen to and she made you feel like you were right in the book watching it all happen.

Wow. What great books

I loved the first one. Very interesting. The second book had me immediately. I continued to be frustrated about no gun evidence. Was thankful to realize I had not missed anything.

Best books, in a long time.

Jailhouse Lawyer

I really enjoyed this book. Keeps you so interested in storyline, you do not want to turn off the audible. The readers kept it interesting with the intonations during the reading of story.

A happy accident

I accidentally purchased this title but I am certainly glad I did. First, what a surprise to get two titles for the price of one and both of such great quality. The stories never dragged, never felt the lull which is sometimes felt in courtroom titles. The author did a great job with making you feel the struggle and helpless feeling of the character. I recommend this title and I am happy about my accidental purchase.

Sad example of the continued stereotyping of women

This story is slow, simple, and uses unease art adverbs and adjectives for no purpose other than to fill pages in a story that could have been told on 1/2 as many chapters. It’s lazy writing. Instead of developing characters and events, they hid them with words.

It’s also a frustrating example of the continued “silly-fication” of women. To imagine that any woman made it through college and through law school and came out so fussy, helpless, inarticulate, and foolish is a testimony to the “I love Lucy” stereotypes that persist in the world despite all evidence to the contrary. If you are going to write about women, try doing it from the 21st century.

The narrator

The book wasn’t bad but the narration was a different story. There was no excitement it was like listening to Ben stein taking attendance.
