Publisher's Summary

The audiobook features a bonus conversation between Gregg Hurwitz and #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner, author of the award-winning Detective D. D. Warren novels.

Evan Smoak returns in
The Last Orphan, the latest New York Times bestselling Orphan X thriller—when everything changes and everything is at risk.

As a child, Evan Smoak was plucked out of a group home, raised and trained as an off-the-books assassin for the government as part of the Orphan program. When he broke with the program and went deep underground, he left with a lot of secrets in his head that the government would do anything to make sure never got out.

When he remade himself as The Nowhere Man, dedicated to helping the most desperate in their times of trouble, Evan found himself slowly back on the government's radar. Having eliminated most of the Orphans in the program, the government will stop at nothing to eliminate the threat they see in Evan. But Orphan X has always been several steps ahead of his pursuers.

Until he makes one little mistake...

Now the president has him in her control and offers Evan a deal—eliminate a rich, powerful man she says is too dangerous to live and, in turn, she'll let Evan survive. But when Evan left the Program he swore to only use his skills against those who really deserve it. Now he has to decide what's more important—his principles or his life.

This series used to be great

Disappointed. This series used to be fast paced, and full of action. It’s turned into the author sermonizing to readers on a host of issues and the story truly suffers for it. Too bad.

Good, but was more about X finding himself

I needed a bit of patience working through this character study, but enjoyed it over all.

Great entry to the series!

Greg H always knows how to deliver a great book and story. Seeing Evan grow as a human being is always quite satisfying.

Kinda disappointing

You hope when you get an orphan X book that it’s going to be like “Out of the Dark” was… but instead of an intense mission oriented book that’s action packed and keeps you on the edge of your seat with some parts of the story being heart warming and thought provoking, you get one that seems like over half the book is just Evan listening to people talk about their thinking which is so much deeper than any human really thinks and it just gets a little boring. I miss the tactical side of the book with the mission and the mission planning… and some good humour and a good love story with Mia.

I believe Gregg Hurwitz is one of the most talented authors ever, he just needs to keep it simple and go back to the way series was.

Scott Brick was still fantastic.

Hurwitz doesn’t just write, he Creates!!!!

Between Gregg Hurwitz’s suspenseful prologue and Scott Brick’s distinctive narration I knew this book would be a winner from the moment it began to play.
In the first few minutes a middle of the line (financial, sports, academic…) young twenties goes to a party he wasn’t invited to. His absentee girlfriend was. He’s given something to snort at the door and then his world goes out of focus. Unfortunately he doesn’t get to live much longer than that.
Following chapters have Evan Smoak getting apprehended by the Secret Service. It seems the President (now a woman) wants a favor. It appears that there’s a very wealthy man at odds with her and her plans. She wants him eliminated. Evan is held hostage and actually calls on Candy McClure, his one time nemesis turned cautious ally to help him escape. (I find McClure so entertaining!)
Before he can make any decisions he must first go see Mia (his maybe girlfriend) who has just come out of a two month coma. He sneaks a cellphone to her hospital room so he can at least call. He knows he can’t let the gov’t know they have a relationship of any kind or she could/would be used as leverage.
Meanwhile Joey (Evan’s somewhat protégé) is off on a road trip to find herself. Still, Evan contacts her for research on the man (Luke Devine) the President wants killed. When Evan gets involved he wants to see a dossier on the man and make sure that eliminating him will not violate his code of ethics. Evan doesn’t realize just how dangerous the man is. But he’ll soon find out…
Scott Brick is a phenomenal narrator and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to him.
This book has my VERY HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!

Gregg and Scott do it again!!!

Great as usual! Evan is one of a kind; combined with the mind of Hurwitz and brilliant narration of Scott Brick I’m continually memorized.
No need to summarize the story … if you’re a fan of this series just sit back and enjoy the twists and turns. For those of you who are new can easily grab others in the series and enjoy this masterful ensemble.

Maudlin

“They weren’t friends really; they were occasional allies and
something like lovers who hadn’t yet bothered with sex.”
This was an improvement over the last two books, however, there’s still a disproportional amount of time on feelings and rants. Life, government, even his friends are all pushing down on Evan. Then Joey gets her scenes of stress and her pity party rants. Add in speechifying by fed Naomi Templeton, mogul Divine, even the President on how the world works. Ugh. So. Much. Talking. And politics. And class struggles.

“He’s like a ruling member of the urinati.”
Maudlin parts aside, Evan’s investigation into two deaths was an engaging mystery. I enjoyed the colorful gang of baddies and watching them get their comeuppances. I was thrilled to see Mia’s role wane and Candy’s role wax into more than a mere cameo. Candy, Tommy, and even Joey when she’s being funny, provide the snarky chaser to the action parts of the book that I love. And yes, in addition to The Commandments, there’s that one random scene to look forward to, when Evan stares the oblivious bully in the eye and says “do I look scared to you?” Cue the Orphan X formula and grab the popcorn.

Another Orphan X Winner!

Might be slightly bias, but number 8 is the best X novel yet! I have the Audible version and the words just leaped out of my IPad speaker!
I hope we can get Book 9 before Xmas.

If not, could we get an Orphan V Origin that takes V from the beginning right up to book 8?

Awesome writing Gregg and voice acting from Scott Brick and the woman who did V!!!!

FORCED MYSELF TO FINISH THIS

I am a HUGE fan of the Orphan X series and must confess the last two books in the series failed miserably. The author should have ended with "Prodigal Son" book 6. After a shocking Book 7 and all the negative reviews, I was looking forward to this one and honestly believed he would redeem himself to previous glory. Did not happen. Such a shame...

Does it again

When you think it couldn’t get any better Orphan X pulls it off again. This time he performing a mission for the president whom he really doesn’t like but she offers to reinstate his immunity again in which he lost in I believe book 7 maybe 6. Again the narration by Scott Brick is outstanding. I’ve listened to all 8 Orphan X audiobooks and he is the driving force of making X come to life. Thanks for bringing Orphan V back Candy she kicks ass. And I love Joey and Dog oh and I cannot forget Tommy. The ending leave you wanting to know what is going to happen in the next Orphan book. Does X’s dad answer the door in the next book in the series. Can’t wait to find out so Gregg Hurwitz don’t make us wait to long. As I always say it’s worth the credit and if you don’t like it you can alway exchange it. But if you’ve never listened to any of the Orphan audiobooks pick up and get hooked on this series by starting with the first in the series.

Worst narrator ever

I forgot how much I disliked this narrator. It spoils the whole story. Although I’ve been a fan of Orphan X novels in the past, I can’t listen to this Audible book. Find someone one else to narrate—Pleas!

Humanity

I love this series. Through the series Evan has struggled to find his humanity. I know why Mark titled it “The Last Orphan”. Evan is slowly finding his humanity.

Joey is ruining this series.

I have really enjoyed every book in this series but the last 2 books she has made the books less and less enjoyable. She seems like an entitled snarky 12 year old. This book is definitely the worst of the series and I hope the next one is better.
