Publisher's Summary

The discovery of a missing woman’s bones force Ruth and Nelson to finally confront their feelings for each other as they desperately work to exonerate one of their own in this not-to-be-missed Ruth Galloway mystery from USA Today bestselling author Elly Griffiths.

When builders discover a human skeleton during a renovation of a café, they call in archeologist Dr. Ruth Galloway, who is preoccupied with the threatened closure of her department and by her ever-complicated relationship with DCI Nelson. The bones turn out to be modern—the remains of Emily Pickering, a young archaeology student who went missing in 2002. Suspicion soon falls on Emily’s Cambridge tutor and also on another archeology enthusiast who was part of the group gathered the weekend before she disappeared—Ruth’s friend Cathbad.

As they investigate, Nelson and his team uncover a tangled web of relationships within the archeology group and look for a link between them and the café where Emily’s bones were found. Then, just when the team seem to be making progress, Cathbad disappears. The trail leads Ruth a to the Neolithic flint mines in Grimes Graves. The race is on, first to find Cathbad and then to exonerate him, but will Ruth and Nelson uncover the truth in time to save their friend?

Satisfying

Having read or listened to nearly every Ruth Galloway book this one was one is a favourite and am thankful for the satisfactory ending. Though am hopeful for future glimpses into Ruth’s life. Truly well written and performed. Bravo.

A perfect ending to a truly wonderful series

Have read all the Ruth Galloway Mysteries and this was my first time doing it the audiobook way - the narrator is so good I wish I had tried this earlier in the series! Sad to say goodbye to Ruth et al but I have to say I loved the ending - it felt truly satisfying and not at all like the author was pandering to readers.

A nice finish

Lots of reminiscing by the main characters and a fairly tame story arc but overall a satisfying end to the series. I hope Ruth and Nelson's story continues someday, in some form. A novella or Christmas story would be nice. Like family, you want to check in occasionally and see how everyone is doing! Or maybe Kate can have her own series as a mystery-solving actress (or whatever she ends up doing).

A tidy conclusion

The narrator is marvelous and the storyline finale for the characters was satisfying. The actual murder plot felt weak to me.

Tears and laughter

A wonderful wrap up to a series I don’t want to end. Very thankful that Jane McDowell was able to read as much of the series as she did. She absolutely embodied this story. Thank you to Elly Griffiths for providing many hours of entertainment. Now to start all over again.

Meh

Not much of a story. A predictable wrap up. The narrator is truly everything for this book and the series.
