À propos de cet audio

A classic science fiction novel by one of the greatest writers of the genre, set in a future world where one man's dreams control the fate of humanity.

In a future world racked by violence and environmental catastrophes, George Orr wakes up one day to discover that his dreams have the ability to alter reality. He seeks help from Dr. William Haber, a psychiatrist who immediately grasps the power George wields. Soon George must preserve reality itself as Dr. Haber becomes adept at manipulating George's dreams for his own purposes.

The Lathe of Heaven is an eerily prescient novel from award-winning author Ursula K. Le Guin that masterfully addresses the dangers of power and humanity's self-destructiveness, questioning the nature of reality itself. It is a classic of the science fiction genre.

I felt vertigo witnessing the shifting reality created by the unwitting and powerless Mr OR. He is literally the fulcrum around which reality forks. It's terrifying! There are no unnecessary characters, as she does so well. It's straight to the point with foreshadowing and reflexion.

Mind blowing

The story caught me and transported me to a new world. I every story unique.

...comes not abusing it with vaguely defined progressive goals, because you might just melt reality.

Reading The Lathe of Heaven, I was struck less by Le Guin’s much-lauded subtlety than by a sense that the novel gestures at psychological and philosophical complexity without ever fully achieving it. The narrative’s opacity, far from being an invitation to depth, too often felt like a veneer—an attempt to signal familiarity with psychiatry, consciousness, and existential ethics that the writing couldn’t substantiate. While many readers praise the novel’s ambiguity, I found it betrayed the author’s uncertain grasp of the psychological and philosophical theories she sought to evoke. For me, the text feels most alive in its willingness to question the project of “fixing” reality, yet the lack of genuine clinical insight and the flatness of its characters left me unconvinced. Ultimately, The Lathe of Heaven offers the posture of profundity, but for a reader attuned to true complexity—especially within the mind and the consulting room—it comes across as more performative than profound.

A good layperson effort

George finds himself in a difficult situation - mandatory therapy with Dr Haber. He needs to tell the doctor that he believes his dreams can change reality.

George is the only one who remembers these alternate realities, and they aren't always positive

To avoid dreaming, George has been self medicating over the years, and eventually winds up overdosing and in the office of the good doctor.

An unbelievable story, but Dr Harber decides to give George a test, but it will require him to dream, under the supervision, and guidance of the doctor.

So this is my first Le Guin, and it was excellent. Its not a long book, so I finished it in an afternoon. Few wasted words, incredible world building, and a loveable main character in George. As the story increasingly moves towards weird, I was even more engaged.

Really fun read - and I bought myself a few more titles from the master.

I had high hope for this book, but I don't think it has aged very well. The social elements feel dated, and the science part of the fiction feels unbelievable now.
