Publisher's Summary

Here is the complete and unabridged tale of Ichabod Crane and his ill-fated visit to Sleepy Hollow. Half of the charm of the tale is Irving's beautiful prose, as he describes the glorious New England countryside. But of course there are chills galore when the Headless Horseman appears.

delightfully ghoulish and mysterious

performer put just the right amount of ghoulish Delight and ridicule into his reading of this great old story. Brings back memories for me.

Performance makes this story

We think we know this story from the movies, but the actual written story has many slow spots to the modern ear. However, the narration by B. J. Harrison kept the story lively and moving.#Classic #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

A great story!

I've read this book in several editions, in English and Spanish, and the Audiobook performed by B. J. Harrison is excellent. My problem always was that I wanted to read the story in the fall, and picture everything while sitting in the autumn nature myself but, if I read the book, I couldn't really enjoy the environment. Well, with an audiobook I could really look at the brown leaves, the river and the trail I walk on, while listening to Ichabod's tale. Bonus points for the last part, which I listened to in the forest, at night. Extra spooky. This is one of the best ghost (?) stories ever written and I really enjoy it very time.

Classic with a classic reading

Timeless classic that, once I got beyond the obvious racist overtones of some of its characters portrayals, spirited me back to a time long ago to spook me get again. Kudos to the narrator.

Great story

Beautiful writing and excellent narrator. Irving is a true master of writing tales only rivaled by Poe and Hawthorne.

Deliciously creepy

It’s a rainy, gray Halloween afternoon, and I listened to Sleepy Hollow while carving jack-o-lanterns. Wonderful! The reader is pitch perfect with a voice made for the story.

First timer

For someone hearing the actual story for the first time. It’s nothing that I expected from what little I know of the story from movies and cartoons.

Great narrator

Good job! Took me right into the story which I hadn’t read for years.

15 words is annoying. Get rid of that requirement.

Pop culture made me disappointed in this origin

I think that pop culture has really altered my imagination of what the original story was about.

I love Harrison as a narrator and have listened to many of his other audiobooks.

However, I chose to listen to this story when I was tired. So I fell asleep - twice.

I think I was just hoping for more about the legend of the Headless Horseman and less about the town of Sleepy Hollow and the rivalry with Brom Bones.

And in the end we're not even really sure there is a ghost of the Hessian soldier because it could have been a trick!

Seems like a missed opportunity for a good ghost story which is a shame because the writing is poetic.

3 out of 5 Heads.

Winner out of six different audio versions

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is one of my all time favorites and I hold it very dear to my heart. This Halloween, I decided I wanted to try something fun and made a contest to see which was the best audio version I could find. Out of six different ones, this was the winner by a long shot! The narrator is phenomenal! My only complaint is that this version cut out the postscript at the end of the story (which several of the versions I listened to did as well and I just don’t understand it. It’s a part of the story too! Why cut it?) other than that, it was absolutely perfect in every way. I went into the contest imagining exactly what I wanted in a narrator for the story and BJ Harrison ended up being exactly what I’d wished for, and I HIGHLY recommend this version!
