Publisher's Summary
The highly acclaimed author of Watching Edie returns with a new novel of dark psychological suspense that explores how those closest to us have the most to hide....
A daughter
Beth has always known there was something strange about her daughter, Hannah. The lack of emotion, the disturbing behavior, the apparent delight in hurting others.... Sometimes, Beth is scared of her and what she could be capable of.
A son
Luke comes from the perfect family, with the perfect parents. But one day, he disappears without a trace, and his girlfriend, Clara, is desperate to discover what has happened to him.
A life built on lies
As Clara digs into the past, she realizes no family is truly perfect and uncovers a link between Luke's long-lost sister and a strange girl named Hannah. Now Luke's life is in danger because of the lies once told and the secrets once kept. Can Clara find him before it's too late?
What the critics say
"The Lies We Told has the makings of your perfect weekend read. Think: an obsession, a dysfunctional family, and a disappearance, with an unreliable narrator to top it all off. Page, turned." (The Skimm)
“[T]he construction and pacing are solid, staying just far enough ahead of the reader to be fun, and offering, in the last quarter, a buffet table of twists.” (New York Times Book Review)
“[A] twisty psychological thriller.... Think you have the plot figured out? Think again. There are no easy answers in Way's dark, compelling story. Grade: A” (The Cleveland Plain Dealer)

Wow. Highly Recommended Mystery/Thriller
This book is about two completely different families and the story of each is told in parallel but one is present day and the other is 20 years ago. The aspect that keeps you on the edge of your seat is how/when/if the two storylines/families converge. Each family has a very intriguing story that is so dissimilar you won’t even be able to imagine what they have to do with each other. Don’t let the somewhat dull few minutes of the book deter you, looking back, it really isn’t dull but the tone wasn’t so appealing to me personally and it took me two tries to get into it. This has to be one of the best and most intricately woven web of storylines — especially because the author keeps everything in order and you don’t get confused, which happens more often than not in other books that attempt such complicated plots. I listened to the author’s other book, “Watching Edie” and I got so confused and mixed-up I had to make notes to organize everything and relisten to so many parts — although this was mostly due to the practically indistinctive narration of the two main characters. But anyway, whether or not you liked her other book, this one is great on its own. I highly recommend it, I’d put this in my top 20 maybe even 15 of the year and I go through at least 2 books a week, minimum.

6 Stars
Only the 2nd book I've given 6 stars too :) It was SO very good. I could not wait to read (or listen via Audible actually) everyday. I was worried, based on some other reviews, it would be confusing going back and forth between 1980's and current day, with a lot of characters, but it was not..it was GREAT! Probably the first time I felt truly creeped out by a character in a long time. Hannah.

Oh The Tangled Web..
The Lies We Told is the story of a family in crisis in 2017 along side a family in crisis in 1984. When we find out what the two families have in common, an unending spiral of lies surfaces that makes things extremely convoluted, and when the pieces start to come together the listeners end up with their mouths wide open and the 'I didn't see that coming' face.
The Lies We Told is about long time lies that effect and destroy families over the years. Parts of it are terrifying, parts of it are touching, and other parts are exhilarating. This book has everything a voracious psychological thriller should have, and it should satiate the pallet of any fan of this genre. It's well written, beautifully narrated, and full of twists, turns, grit, surprises and it help my interest throughout. Good read- recommended!

Appallingly Foul Language
An acceptable mystery and thriller showing the author’s potential was ruined with pointlessly foul language. Multiple characters in multiple situations using the F word added not one single thing to the story. It was not modern or hip or liberated. It was offensive and unnecessary.
Excellent narration save the grating attempt to sound like a child...

F*** --DO PEOPLE REALLY TALK LIKE THAT?
ACCEPTABLE STORY,NICE PERFORMANCE,BUT THE AUTHOR APPARENTLY SUFFERS FROM A COMPULSION TO INJECT F*** OR VARIATIONS THEREOF INTO EVERY SECOND SENTENCE. FOR ME,THIS OBSESSION WAS A REAL NUISANCE WHEN LISTENING.

Ridiculous
Well, I wasted those hours. Absurd plot fueled by a bunch of one-dimensional characters making stupid choices. The narrator performing the part of the older woman does not help. She screeches the inane dialogue. I only gave this two stars because I actually finished it (reserve one star ratings for those I don’t). Save your credit.

Kept me guessing... and that's rare!
The fact that I didn't connect all the dots in the first hour of the book is the biggest compliment I can pay almost any story in this genre. The narration was also great. Not too crazy about the ending, but I imagine there may be more to come

Great listen/unique story/fabulous narrators.
Talk about a tangled web we weave or what? This story hooked me right from the beginning. I was mesmerized by the past and present stories, then the colliding of them together at the end. What a well-written book! Full of twists and turns. Perfect build up of story. Unique. The only change I would make to this book was the cussing/swearing. Who needs all that swearing really? Seems to be a norm in todays culture which is a shame.
Fabulous narrators as both women did an excellent job. I loved that you could always tell which character was telling their story. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good written psychological suspense-mystery/thriller.
