Publisher's Summary

The Lily and the Crown is a lesbian scifi romance about daring to risk your heart with someone you shouldn’t.

Ariana “Ari” Geiker lives an isolated life on an imperial space station commanded by her father. The skilled, young botanist rarely leaves her living quarters, where she maintains an elaborate garden. When an imperious older woman is captured from a pirate ship and given to her as a slave, Ariana’s perfectly ordered life is thrown into chaos. Her nameless slave is watchful, intelligent, dangerous, and sexy, and seems to know an awful lot about tactics, star charts, and the dread, marauding pirate queen, Mir.

What happens when the slave also reveals an expertise in seduction to her innocent mistress?

The LGBTQ community deserves better

Are we so starved for content as a LGBTQT community, that this stuff is passing as a five star read?

Pure and simple, it is a twink romance. If you could even call it that. With Ds undertones.

And that's cool. But if you're going to write that, then freaking own it! Be who you are instead of trying to hide it under the veneer of a YA sci-fi novel

Because ultimately this is just fluff with marshmallow and then fluff and more fluff on top of that and incredibly if not a more frustrating ( I can't believe I didn't dnf this level) MC who is written so incredibly stupid that it is painful. Yes I get that she's an ingenue, yes I get that she has had a sheltered life but it doesn't mean she's stupid. In fact she is written as someone who is quite smart and intuitive and yet on the flip side her interactions are so stupid. I mean give your freaking audience the benefit of the doubt of not being stupid themselves.

was it intentional, or is it just super fluffy to diverse your attention from the fact that this is not a very smart or well-written story.

Loved it!

I really enjoyed this book. Angela Dawe did a fantastic job narrating, as always, so I would absolutely recommend the audio version if that’s your cup of tea.

I thought this was a unique take on the ice queen trope, making her a slave to the sweet and innocent younger woman (most ice queen romances that I’ve read have put the IQ in a position of power, so this was unique). The MC was endearing – perhaps because I can relate to some of her quirks and introverted personality – and I thought the choice to voice the book from her innocent and sheltered perspective was a good one, it made for a few entertaining scenes (especially when it came to Sinclair’s infamous hot and steamy bits!). Speaking of hot & steamy…well, it’s HOT & STEAMY – a few scenes were a bit of a kinky surprise, but not in a bad way.

The thing that makes this a 4.5-star for me and not 5 is just that I REALLY wanted to hear a bit of the book from Assistant’s perspective, that’s really it. I would absolutely recommend this one! Just don’t hold your breath (like I did) for even a chapter from Assistant’s POV.

There needs to be a sixth star for performance!

While I enjoyed reading this in paperback in 2019, the experience was greatly heightened by what I now refer to as "The Dawe Effect." Narrator Angela Dawe is always outstanding, but I would venture to say she even raised it up a notch here. This is one of the benefits of having a great actor perform these books. It's like watching a film, but with your ears (if that makes sense.) While I squirmed in delight at the low, commanding voice she used for Assistant, her performance of introverted botanist Ariana Geiker was especially endearing.
I love Sinclair's books - which originated as The Devil Wears Prada fanfic and Ylva Publishing was smart enough to scoop her up. They are well written, intelligent and ridiculously sexy. Both this and the X Ingredient both have strong power play elements - and they never go quite the way you expect, which I appreciate. There was one scene in the book of a sexual nature that was on its way to making me uncomfortable, but before that could happen there was a shift. Beyond that, I absolutely loved it. And just so we're clear - this book's focus isn't sex so I don't want to give that impression, but it certainly plays a strong role.
These are two very interesting characters who are polar opposites in many ways, but fulfill something in the other that no one has before. If I could only choose one way to experience this book, it would definitely be on audio. Just when I think Dawe can't possibly get any better, she does. An all-time top 20 for me.

Angela Dawe & Roslyn Sinclair - my new favourite!

'The Lily and the Crown' has been one of my all-time favourite erotica age-gap romance novels! And Angela Dawe has just made it even more steamy and stunning! She made it more NSFW, if I may say so!

This is honestly totally worth the long wait!

Sexy & Entertaining, what more do you need?!

Let me start by saying I loved this book! I was instantly sad when I heard “epilogue”. The intimate scenes were impeccably written and I loved the unique dynamic they had, even seemingly problematic at times.
The narrator was fantastic, she always is.

The synopsis mentioned sci-fi so I was expecting more world building. There was hardly any description of the space ship, station, or planets. Was this the future or an alternate universe?
I’m only critical of this because I think world building would’ve taken this book to soaring heights as sci-fi/romance genre. The story itself is fantastic.

Highly entertaining and HOT!

Welcome to the Hot House

I love how this book blends age gap, sci-fi, and power imbalance with some botany, love and a good smattering of sex. Full disclosure: sometimes I fast forward through the sex scenes of books because, well, they kind of get redundant and/or gratuitous. This book has neither which make for an even more exciting listen.

On the outreaches of the Empire, introverted botanist Ariana has lived a happy life amongst the plant life she has cultivated. Her father, the commander of the station they live on, gifts his daughter a slave to keep her company. Ari is not interested in having company nor is she a fan of slavery. To keep the peace with her father, she accepts "Assistant" into her life. From the start its evident that Assistant is more than she seems and as time goes on the clues point to her identity. We as the audience get it, but Ari never puts the pieces together. Misunderstandings (which happen a lot due to the different natures and ages of the MCs,) stir up a lot of heat, both good and bad. The emotional bravery Ari exhibits is amazing for one so young, with so much to lose. The character development is wonderful. Heat, humor and humus in one offering. Can it get any better? Oh yes it can, when Angela Dawe performs it.

Superb!

Such a story of power and patience and political worlds for improvement! Roslyn Sinclair deftly guides the reader in two realities, revealing the crucial gray between the black and white.
Angela Dawe breathes depth of character with her narration, letting personalities shine through a moment’s hesitation or trailing words, enriching (never overpowering) Sinclair’s fantastic tale.

Fantastic

This book is in my top 5 favorite books of all time and I’ve read hundreds, if not thousands over my life. I read The Lily and the Crown (more than once) a while ago and periodically checked to see if there was an audiobook for it because I love it so much. I was over the moon when it finally appeared on audible. The audiobook somehow made me love the book more than I already did. Angela Dawe did it justice. If you love lesbians, pirates, and lesbian pirates, this is a fantastic book. If I could give it 10 stars I would.

Very different

This wasn’t my typical kind of book (science fiction) but it was nice to step out of my norm. I liked the story, but it took me a while to decide as I was listening. The narrator was great and the romance got better throughout the book. I’m just not really into space ship stories. I’m still glad I listened to it.

Predictable but...

I loved it nonetheless. It was quite the adventure, though I was kind of... frustrated with Ari's naivety sometimes. But loved the characters development.
And Angela Dawe narration was, as usual, impeccable!
