Publisher's Summary

“God...wherever He is, whoever He is, hasn’t cared about Syria in a very many years.”

The Sukhoi Su-57 “Felon”. The Russian Federation’s formidable new stealth fighter. Sleek, dangerous, and—forward-deployed into the maelstrom of the Syrian Civil War for field testing—vulnerable.

For the CIA, the Su-57’s presence in Syria presents an opportunity. For Mossad’s David Shafron, the former assassin once known as the “Lion of God”, it represents a threat. For the Syrian rebels soon tasked with its recovery...their own damnation.

It’s a high-stakes gambit worthy of the Cold War, but this war is red-hot.

For Mohamed Taferi, dispatched by Shafron to lead the operation on the ground, the Syrian conflict is nothing new. An Israeli Druze and Mossad field officer, he’s found himself in the war-ravaged country countless times over the years. But this mission will plunge him deeper into the darkness—the madness—of the inferno than ever before, hunted by Russian Spetsnaz and a sadistic Syrian Special Forces captain, forced to rely on a ragtag, bloodied band of the unlikeliest allies, rebels, and jihadists alike, in a nightmarish journey of the damned across the very heart of desolation.

And no one is emerging from these fires unscathed.

A Satisfying Slow Burn

The Lion’s Paw by Stephen England is a first-rate espionage and military thriller. It has several things going for it.

First, the author did a wonderful job of developing his characters. Over the course of the novel, he deftly lays out the personalities, motivations, and backstories of the various characters such that by the end you have a full and satisfying understanding of why things happened as they did. Just as important, there are no head-scratchers as to why somebody did something. Everything done, lines up with how the character was developed.

Second, the amount of research the author did to familiarize himself with the region and the Syrian civil war came through in spades. The degree to which the author is familiar with the politics, geography, religion and cultures paints a rich picture in the reader’s mind that makes you wonder if England himself didn’t serve in the region. I also loved how he regularly brought in Arabic words/phrases. This added to the story’s realism.

Finally, for me, the story was the best kind - realistic, gritty, and well-paced. There was no superhero stuff going on, the dynamics and decisions of the involved intelligence agencies seemed spot on, and the story itself could have been pulled out of an actual after action report.

Mr. England writes one of the most authentic fictional stories I’ve read in some time. I give it five stars.

The narration was also excellent.
