A Satisfying Slow Burn
The Lion’s Paw by Stephen England is a first-rate espionage and military thriller. It has several things going for it.
First, the author did a wonderful job of developing his characters. Over the course of the novel, he deftly lays out the personalities, motivations, and backstories of the various characters such that by the end you have a full and satisfying understanding of why things happened as they did. Just as important, there are no head-scratchers as to why somebody did something. Everything done, lines up with how the character was developed.
Second, the amount of research the author did to familiarize himself with the region and the Syrian civil war came through in spades. The degree to which the author is familiar with the politics, geography, religion and cultures paints a rich picture in the reader’s mind that makes you wonder if England himself didn’t serve in the region. I also loved how he regularly brought in Arabic words/phrases. This added to the story’s realism.
Finally, for me, the story was the best kind - realistic, gritty, and well-paced. There was no superhero stuff going on, the dynamics and decisions of the involved intelligence agencies seemed spot on, and the story itself could have been pulled out of an actual after action report.
Mr. England writes one of the most authentic fictional stories I’ve read in some time. I give it five stars.
