Story
With no water, no air and no native life, the planet Gora is unremarkable. The only thing it has going for it is a chance proximity to more popular worlds, making it a decent stopover for ships travelling between the wormholes that keep the Galactic Commons connected. If deep space is a highway, Gora is just your average truck stop. One of the many establishments present is the Five-Hop One-Stop. When a freak technological failure halts traffic to and from Gora, three strangers are thrown together at the Five-Hop.

After touring the rural areas of Panga, Sibling Dex (a Tea Monk of some renown) and Mosscap (a robot sent on a quest to determine what humanity really needs) turn their attention to the villages and cities of the little moon they call home. It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend. One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.

Breq - the soldier who used to be a spaceship - is serving the emperor she swore to destroy. She's been given her own warship, her own crew, and ordered to the only place in the galaxy she would have agreed to go: to Athoek Station, to protect the family of the lieutenant she murdered in cold blood. Athoek was annexed by the Empire some 600 years ago, and by now everyone is fully 'civilised'. Or should be - but everything is not as tranquil as it appears.

Adriane is one such explorer. As an astronaut on an extrasolar research vessel, she and her fellow crewmates sleep between worlds and wake up each time with different features. Her experience is one of fluid body and stable mind and of a unique perspective on the passage of time. Back on Earth, society changes dramatically from decade to decade, as it always does.

Firefly meets Mass Effect in this thrilling self-published debut!
When Rosemary Harper joins the crew of the Wayfarer, she isn't expecting much. The Wayfarer, a patched-up ship that's seen better days, offers her everything she could possibly want: a small, quiet spot to call home for a while, adventure in far-off corners of the galaxy, and distance from her troubled past.
But Rosemary gets more than she bargained for with the Wayfarer. The crew is a mishmash of species and personalities, from Sissix, the friendly reptillian pilot, to Kizzy and Jenks, the constantly sparring engineers who keep the ship running. Life onboard is chaotic but more or less peaceful - exactly what Rosemary wants.
Until the crew are offered the job of a lifetime: the chance to build a hyperspace tunnel to a distant planet. They'll earn enough money to live comfortably for years...if they survive the long trip through war-torn interstellar space without endangering any of the fragile alliances that keep the galaxy peaceful. But Rosemary isn't the only person onboard with secrets to hide, and the crew will soon discover that space may be vast, but spaceships are very small indeed.

poorly written and as subtle as a brick
I couldn't get more than about half way through. every scene is some sort of PSA, the message is fine but it feels very rigid, forced and unnatural. it suffers badly from telling instead of showing, there is a confusingly huge number of aliens to keep track of and the characters don't really seem to have any room for character growth. the characters are also rather inconsistent and hamfisted. overall it feels like a fanfiction without any source material.

So disappointed in this
On first review of the cover blurb, I thought this book, and the crews' job, sounded intriguing. And the universe the author has imagined has great potential. And then it was wasted. The relentless perkiness of the characters, simplistic adolescent responses to what should be complex adult situations, the lack of depth in character creation, all proved too much for me. I tried but couldn't manage to get more than a third of the way through it, I was so bored and irritated by the characters and their problems I couldn't force myself to finish. A pity.

It is not riveting and yet I finished it.
1. Sound effects and music, please don't do that. There was a chapter that had the most annoying background music. I almost redeemed my purchase it was so bad. In fact, there are some sections that are so slow and irrelevant that I almost redeemed my credit. Yet the story slowly unfolds in front of you with its optimistic social commentary. I chose to listen to it before bed and would often go to sleep wondering how Rosemary and the Wayfarers would make out. I hated this one so much that I ordered the next book...like I said, "The story grows on you".

An amazing breath of fresh air - sci-fi @ its best
Who should buy this book:
If you like Firefly buy this!
If you like Arthur C Clarke, buy this,
If you like Kim Stanley Robinson buy this.
If you are sick of reading Sci-fi books geared towards 14 year boys who want to read about soldiers in big bad space ships going pew pew pew all the time and flexing their male organs then you will love this.
Who should not buy this book:
If you are a 14 year old boy(or one trapped in the body of a man) that wants to read about space soldiers in big bad ships flexing their male organs while going pew pew pew, then you probably should skip this one and buy Columbus Day instead

Can't say enough good things about this
Many reviewers have commented that this book seems to be plotless. I disagree. Though yes, it certainly focuses more on the characters and their relationships rather than the traditional plot, it still has a beginning, middle and end and is incredible. I never wanted to press the pause button. The performance was great as well, and I was at first glad to see she reads the next book, a closed and common orbit. I just pray audible gets the rites to sell it in Canada, because I very much want to read it and would rather not read the IBook. I fact I don't think I will.

Good little sci-fi book, more about relationships
Good little sci-fi book that deals more with the relationships between people (and species) than with space battles or even space travel. While yes, it all happens in space and is about space travel, it was a really interesting look into how a crew of very mixed characters would get along and make it through challenges together. The narrator for this book was also a major factor of me rating it this high. She did the human voices exactly as I'd imagine them and the alien ones were funny and strange, just like sci-fi should be. One good thing about the book was it made me compare the situations in the plot to the real world I live in, which is what good sci-fi should do. There were a lot of easily-identifiable situations, relationships and choices. But there were also things that, when you read deeper, were great insights into life. Lots of things I could see related to Trump, or to the racial struggles around the world, to politics and economics. All in all a good listen, kept me entertained and even had me thinking at times!

A disappointment
Episodes from the lives of a multi-species spaceship on a long journey - might have worked as a TV series, as a book it lacks a plot to speak of - 75% into the book I was still wondering when the interesting part is going to begin.
The characters, while loveable, are extremely two-dimensional and spend most of their time stating qliches about the importance of friendship and cultural sensitivity.

bland, saccharine firefly homage
This is a long, lulling document of an unusually bland workplace. Imagine your office, except all the moral ambiguity has been sucked out. Much like your office, day-to-day things proceed mostly smoothly, and most crises are quickly resolved. Unlike your office, you have the overwhelming sense that the moral ark of the story will stop anyone from getting anything other than their just deserts, that no-one will make any irremediable mistakes, and that good people will end up in good circumstances, because they are good.
If that's your bag, good. For me... I didn't hate it, because it's nice to have a lulling sleepy bed time story from time to time.

loved it
I read this book a while ago and used the audiobook to refresh my mind before digging into the second one. I love it the first read through and I think I now live it even more.

Beautiful!
The first audiobook I never wanted to pause. Non-operatic storytelling, a real universe, excellent narration.

Just lovely
The book is excellent, wonderfully modern sci-fi set in an engaging and well-constructed new universe. The characters are memorable and lively.
The performance is also fantastic, and I will absolutely be seeking out more of Patricia Rodriguez's work. Her narration is excellent, and she does a great job making the character voices distinct and recognizable.

disappointing
All the ingredients are there to make a good story. I found the end result boring, cliché, and as a rule uninteresting.
It is however probably a matter of taste. The universe described is interesting and rich, the characters have some originality (less so if you read a lot of SF, but they each have a very specific individuality); it might be a matter of slow pace, of not enough happening in the long hours of reading everything (15 hours!), or linked to reading rythm. my final opinion is "meh!"
