Publisher's Summary

It is estimated that more than 20 million Americans have practiced some form of yoga, yet almost none of them have heard of yoga's early teachers or their insights. While we are familiar with yoga's physical benefits, the original purpose of yoga as a path to inner freedom and enlightenment is embodied by only a few students in the West. Handed down to us throughout the past 5,000 years, the mental and spiritual disciplines of this complete philosophy for living are in danger of vanishing forever.

Now yoga scholar Georg Feuerstein immerses you in The Lost Teachings of Yoga, the first comprehensive audio curriculum about yoga's original spiritual wisdom and practices. A leading scholar and practitioner of yoga in the West for more than 30 years, Feuerstein introduces you to the wonders beyond yoga's postures and breathing techniques, and points the way to the inner strength and mental peace that is yoga's first objective. Taught by Feuerstein himself, this full 12-session, seven-hour course reveals the true history of yoga, the gifted masters who brought it to the West, its many branches and the rich fruit they yield, yoga's virtues and disciplines that flower into enlightenment, subtle anatomy and the energy of prana or life force, the origins of asanas, and much more. Georg Feuerstein has said that today in the West, we need yoga more than ever. Not simply because we want to develop strong, flexible bodies, but because yoga's vast spiritual heritage can help us uncover the deeper purpose of life. Discover for yourself yoga's ultimate achievement and your foundation for a more effective daily practice with The Lost Teachings of Yoga.

Great interpretation of yoga philosophy

I especially enjoyed the unbiased information and history of how philosophical ideas changed over time.

Very informative!

I very much enjoyed this book. The analysis poses a deep understanding of the yoga tradition, although I did find the speaking speed in some chapters a little too fast so I would recommend slowing it down if you need more time to absorb the material. #Audible1

Very good overview, though missing some points..

closest I've come to Father Figure in this modern world. I've been studying this path since 1990. for me it was first Spiritual Awakening then psychology of Carl Jung and only 5 years ago realizing the beautiful yoga philosophy fit with most things I had learned, despite the widespread ignorance and the linear rational religion of Academia and our modern society.
I want to be more optimistic about humanity However, I don't think the ultimate goal spiritual growth is to go live in a cave but instead to have a positive effect on the evolution and healing of our planet. I give a more basic and fundamental definition of enlightenment, experiencing the reality of higher Self, living towards that reality and sharing it with others. Furthermore what about Videhas? Souls who have already acquired the wisdom in previous lifetimes. Should mention that I think.
With the internet there's always the hope somebody hugely influential can catch the human spirit and heart and Inspire change. Just remember Beatlemania. They had the world stage for a while and the world was their oyster.

A Master Class with Georg Feuerstein

This is one of the best modern teachings on Yoga, and there are few to boast about. The book is read by Georg Feuersteinn and one gets an intimate sense of being in his very presence. One of the few Yogic Masters of our modern day, this book is a true classic.
