À propos de cet audio

Based on his provocative and popular New York Times op-ed, The Man They Wanted Me to Be is both memoir and cultural analysis. Jared Yates Sexton alternates between an examination of his working class upbringing and historical, psychological, and sociological sources that examine the genesis of toxic masculinity and its consequences for society.

As progressivism changes American society, and globalism shifts labor away from traditional manufacturing, the roles that have been prescribed to men since the Industrial Revolution have been rendered as obsolete. Donald Trump's campaign successfully leveraged male resentment and entitlement, and now, with Trump as president and the rise of the #MeToo movement, it's clear that our current definitions of masculinity are outdated and even dangerous.

Deeply personal and thoroughly researched, The Man They Wanted Me to Be examines how we teach boys what's expected of men in America, and the long-term effects of that socialization-which include depression, shorter lives, misogyny, and suicide. Sexton turns his keen eye to the establishment of the racist patriarchal structure which has favored white men, and investigates the personal and societal dangers of such outdated definitions of manhood.

I’m from Grande Prairie, Alberta Canada and what he describes in this book is extremely painfully familiar. He describes my father, my brothers, and all sorts of men and displays of masculinity I’ve observed and experienced my whole life. His writing is eloquent and observations unflinching, where I might shut down and bury he has stayed awake and excavated. I really appreciate that this out in the world as witness and testament to our horrific, harmful culture.

Wasn't really sure what to expect tbh before buying this book, I like listening to Jared on my favourite podcast when he is a guest and heard them discuss it, thought I would buy it and give it a go, Very pleased I did It had me hooked right from the beginning and listened to it all the way through without break, not a great achievement, but just a testament to how well the book is written, Answered so many questions for me about my own childhood and some of the experiences I had while trying to turn into the man I was expected to be. Honestly was very sad when it was finished. Will be checking out his other books also very soon.

Wow just wow

If you're a man that's been grappling and struggling under the weight of aspiring to be a strong "masculine" man; you've gotta give this a book a shot.

Just the positive affirmation I needed as a young man in this modern world.
