Publisher's Summary

"If it is beyond your power to control, let it go."

"Do not wish that all things will go well with you, but that you will go well with all things."

"In this way, you overcome life's challenges, rather than being overcome by them."

Epictetus (c. AD 50-135) was a former Roman slave (he was also lame in one leg, and walked with a crutch) who went on to become a great teacher. His philosophy, Stoicism, was practical, not theoretical - aimed at relieving human suffering here and now.

The Manual is a collection of Epictetus' essential teachings and pithy sayings, compiled by one of his students. It is the most accessible and actionable guide to Stoic philosophy, as relevant today as it was in the Roman Empire.

This new edition, published by Ancient Renewal, is rendered in contemporary English by Sam Torode.

Best book to live by.

This is a manual not a treatise. A booklet not a tome.

Simple rules to follow daily. You can understand it in an afternoon but it will take a lifetime to live it.

Really the most concise yet thorough book on applying the highest principles to your life.

If you want to learn this is not for you. But if you want distilled wisdom that you can use as a guide this very much IS for you.

A true path to individual honor and integrity.

Excellent Listen!

This is something I listen to over and over again. I urge anyone and everyone to not only have this on audio but in hard copy. First thing I do in the morning and at night.. Great for persons trying to simplify and find inner peace in their lives. I have sent this book to my closest friends and my 15 YEAR old son.. The narration is calming and helps me refocus ... love love love!

A good translation

The translation does an excellent job of bring Epictetus into the modern world. It’s amazing how relevant these ideas and thoughts are.

Fathers buy this for your sons!

Obviously great for daughters too, but wow is this exactly what every teenage boy needs to hear. I was playing it while painting the garage and my son overheard it and said “hey what’s that book you were listening too?” It solves a lot of the issues young men are dealing with at the end of high school years.
