Publisher's Summary

Deadly feuds and ancient secrets spell war in the second novel of The Covenant of Steel, a new epic series of action, intrigue, and magic from a master storyteller who has taken the fantasy world by storm.

"Ryan again showcases his gift for epic fantasy in his excellent sequel to The Pariah . . . . Ryan's evocative prose enhances the suspenseful, intricate story . . . .This fires on all cylinders."—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Times have changed for Alwyn Scribe. Once an outlaw, he’s now a spymaster and sworn protector of Lady Evadine Courlain, whose visions of a demonic apocalypse have earned her the fanatical devotion of the faithful.

Yet Evadine’s growing fame has put her at odds with both Crown and Covenant. As trouble brews in the kingdom, both seek to exploit her position for their own ends.

Sent to the Duchy of Alundia to put down a rebellion, Alwyn must rely on old instincts to fight for his new cause. Deadly feuds and ancient secrets are laid bare as war erupts, a war that will decide the fate of the Kingdom of Albermaine and, perhaps, prevent the coming of the prophesied Second Scourge.

Good but…

I think I’ll not carry on to the next book. Not sure why this story is failing to inspire me. I think it might be largely the narration. The narrator is competent and his voice is not objectionable, but lacks colour. I’m having trouble telling the characters apart. After two book’s worth I still don’t really know the names of many of the characters. Especially the nobles. Names which mostly seem to start with vowel sounds. They speak with the same narrated voice so it’s difficult to differentiate, or to care, I find. So unfortunately I’ll pass on the other books by this author too, since I see they have the same narrator, who I am tired of now.

The religious theme, which supposedly completely underpins the events of this story, is not explained or fleshed out at all, which adds a sense of vague pointlessness to the plot, IMO.

Nevertheless I don’t want to be too hard on this book, which is well written and definitely many notches above most of the fantasy fare out there. I think I would have enjoyed it more in text form, and probably been able to bring the story to life in my mind better that way.

Others might not find the same issues. I don’t regret the purchase and I don’t think you will either.

narrator takes some getting used to. But they grew on me as the story has. Looking forward to the next.

Masterclass

When i listen to a book like this i am instantly depressed. The gulf between this author and the average pen jockey is immeasurable. Im bumbling around in the dark with crayons up my ass while this guy is painting the Sistine chapel.

I wasnt just impressed...i was moved. If I ever decide to write a book i hope its half as good as this.
