Story
Have you ever desired, deep within your soul, to make a comfortable full-time living from a farming enterprise? Too often people dare not even vocalize this desire because it seems absurd. It's like thinking the unthinkable. After all, the farm population is dwindling. It takes too much capital to start. The pay is too low. The working conditions are dusty, smelly and noisy: Not the place to raise a family. This is all true, and more, for most farmers.

Seldom has agriculture held out such a plum. In a day when mainline farm experts predict the continued demise of the family farm, the pastured poultry opportunity shines like a beacon in the night, guiding the way to a brighter future.

"What should we have for dinner?" To one degree or another, this simple question assails any creature faced with a wide choice of things to eat. Anthropologists call it the omnivore's dilemma. Choosing from among the countless potential foods nature offers, humans have had to learn what is safe, and what isn't. Today, as America confronts what can only be described as a national eating disorder, the omnivore's dilemma has returned with an atavistic vengeance.

Story
Fossil fuels and livestock grazing are often targeted as major culprits behind climate change and desertification. But Allan Savory, cofounder of the Savory Institute, begs to differ. The bigger problem, he warns, is our mismanagement of resources. Livestock grazing is not the problem; it's how we graze livestock. If we don't change the way we approach land management, irreparable harm from climate change could continue long after we replace fossil fuels.

Story
The problem of agriculture is as old as civilization. Throughout history, great societies that abused their land withered into poverty or disappeared entirely. Now we risk repeating this ancient story on a global scale due to ongoing soil degradation, a changing climate, and a rising population. But there is reason for hope. David R. Montgomery introduces us to farmers around the world at the heart of a brewing soil health revolution that could bring humanity's ailing soil back to life remarkably fast.

The restoration agriculture system described in this award-winning book works! It is possible for humans to produce staple foods using perennial agricultural ecosystems that actually improve the quality of the environment. This can be done on a backyard, farm, or ranch scale and is needed right now - on a global scale. Restoration Agriculture explains how we can have all of the benefits of natural, perennial ecosystems and create agricultural systems that imitate nature in form and function while still providing for our food, building, fuel, and many other needs.

Publisher's Summary
From Christian libertarian farmer Joel Salatin, a clarion call to listeners to honor the animals and the land and to produce food based on spiritual principles.
Joel Salatin is perhaps the nation's best known farmer, whose environmentally friendly, sustainable Polyface Farms has been featured in Food, Inc. and Time magazine. Now, in his first audiobook written for a faith audience, Salatin offers a deeply personal argument for earth stewardship and calls for fellow Christians to join him in looking to the Bible for a foodscape in line with spiritual truth. Salatin urges Christians to rethink America's allegiance to cheap corporate food that destroys creation in its production, impoverishes third world countries, and supports oligarchical interests. He wonders why Christians ignore and even revel in unhealthy eating habits and factory farming that runs counter to God's design. With scripture and biblical stories, Salatin presents an alternative and shows listeners that in appreciating the pigness of pigs, we celebrate the glory of God.

I am NOT a Christian and yet I encourage everyone to read this book.
Another excellent book/audio. Joel always has something rewarding to say whether he’s sharing his farming philosophies or his faith.
Thanks, Joel, for another revealing viewpoint on life and how we live it. Folks, regardless of your beliefs, there is useful knowledge in this book.
Cheers!

I just like listening to Joel!
I'm not the target audience, buy I always appreciate the understanding I'll achieve by listening to someone who doesn't agree with me.
in this case, I agree with Joel's mission to encourage Americans to take their food more seriously, learn about it and support the good food that comes from good sustainable practices.
unfortunately in this day and age, many self-described Christians do not live by teachings of the Bible and the example of Jesus Christ, thus Joel as a consistent man of faith has to write this book to educate his fellow Christians.
People of deep faith are very helpful to the survival and ascendancy of human civilization, but people of faith just in name and not with the full understanding cause destruction with their limited understanding of their faith. (this is very general and applies to Muslims and people of other religions as well)
if I turn Christian one day, I'll credit it Joel Salatin! :)

Sooo disappointed!
I looked forward to learning about how to take care of animals according to Scripture and an expert. So sad this wasn’t really the case.
It starts off good, even if I kept wondering if it’s not self serving since he sells the products he “preaches” about. But when he started bashing republicans and gun owners ENOUGH!! :/
I am about 4 hrs in and not sure if I even want to continue.

Give it a chance!
Now that I have finished listening to this book, I loved it. In the beginning chapters, I nearly returned it because it was not so much a pricking of the conscience as a stabbing, but it got much better as he turned from “everything you’re doing is wrong” to “here are ways we can all do better, and why!” This book relies heavily on Biblical counsel and wisdom, so non-Christians can take it for what it’s worth to them. It is still an excellent resource for ways we can all do better in caring for our world, whether we believe it’s just a chunk of rock hurtling through space waiting for the sun to wink out, or we believe it is the greatest of creations, and the reason for existence. Really, give it a chance.

Incredible and convicting
I already supported a food system like he lays out as the ideal but this book both solidified my motives to continue to do this (aka quit cheating here and there) as well as inspired me to increase my earth stewardship (maybe get some backyard chickens?). Amazing book by Salatin - I can’t recommend it more for all Christians.

Nail on the Head
Just like the author stated at the beginning, this book was definitely a breath of fresh air. I have been touching on these subjects for the past few years behind our pulpit, and will continue to do so. Most importantly, I pray for strength to be a doer and not just a hearer. I have agreed with and admired Joel's farming practices for years and hope to implement them on a much smaller scale on my property.
