Publisher's Summary

It’s time to change the way we see babies.

Drawing on principles developed by the educator Dr Maria Montessori, The Montessori Baby shows how to raise your baby from birth to age one with love, respect, insight, and a surprising sense of calm. Cowritten by Simone Davies, author of the bestselling The Montessori Toddler, and Junnifa Uzodike, it’s a book filled with hundreds of practical ideas for understanding what is actually happening with your baby, and how you can mindfully assist in their learning and development. Including how to:

  • Prepare yourself for parenthood—physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually.
  • Become an active observer to understand what your baby is really telling you.
  • Create Montessori spaces in your home, including “yes” spaces where nothing is off-limits.
  • Set up activities that encourage baby’s movement and language development at their own pace
  • Raise a secure baby who’s ready to explore the world with confidence.

PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

What the critics say

"The guide is thoughtfully and beautifully laid out: block text, bulleted lists, and simple line illustrations accent the many anecdotes about babies and their living spaces from around the world. For parents interested in Montessori concepts of child development, this will be an invaluable resource.”—Publisher's Weekly Starred Review

“A book that advocates a simple environment with less stuff, less fuss, and a slower speed of life.”—Library Journal

Garbage

Save your money and buy some other parenting book, there are hundreds out there. This book is a self-contracting, repeating, non-sensical money grab and (worst of all) is an extremely boring slog to listen through. Not only does the narrator sound like a robot, but it doesn’t help that the content she is reading was written by two different writers, who at times repeat each other or contradict. Save your time and money and avoid this title.

Such freeing book

I would recommend this book for parents that really want babies that are free in their environment: of course with safe boundaries.

Love how they talk about the concept, “help me to do it myself”

Also love that we should treat babies with respect. One doesn’t really think that because it’s “a baby”

Excellent Introductory Book to Montessori!

The book was very interesting to listen to. It provides a lot of useful information about Montessori for babies. I have listened to many parts more than once. I will actually listen to it again and would recommend it to anyone. Next month I will listen to Montessori Toddler. The voice of the reader could not be any better as well. This is my 1st experience listening to a book, and it has been excellent.

Fantastic but better in book or Kindle form

This was fantastic; however, the book includes pictures to refer back to. Good narration.

Great book, easy to follow with great examples

Loved everything about this book except that it’s doesn’t have an accompanying PDF. There are many reference made to charts and images but in audible we cannot see anything.

Good Information until the end where everything sounds so picture perfect

The parents at the end are amazing. They pretty much just struggle with room arrangements but nothing else. Discouraging.

Good, but only if you’ve had a perfect pregnancy/birth

My only issue with this book that I can’t seem to let go of as a new mother, is that my pregnancy and birth, as well as postpartum experience was less than ideal from the Montessori perspective. It has left me with a sense that I have caused developmental harm to my baby, even though logically I know none of what happened to me was my fault. If you’re a new mother or parent and the conditions of pregnancy/birth/postpartum are not perfect, that’s ok. Life happens and we adapt, and so do our babies. I wish this book made room for this, but it leaves me feeling like I lack the perfection they seem to promote. Our culture as a whole does NOT support new mothers and parents through the child bearing portal. The world they’re describing to me sounds like it exists on another planet, or to that of a highly privileged person.

Beyond that, it does provide good ideas for supporting the development of your baby.

This is a great book and I’m excited to put it into action. Lots of tactical tips and I ended up buying a hardcopy so I could reference it later.

Kind & Inspiring to New Parents

The narrator is soothing and reassuring like a good mother. I learned a kinder, simple and intelligent way to parent. Best of all my husband found the Montessori Methods to be logical as well. We will do our best in 7 months to encourage exploration and safe choices for a growing young mind in a busy world.

Chapter Titles and Organization Easy to Navigate

I love the way this books content is organized, I can easily go back and review content without wasting time searching through lengthy chapters. The book was very informative and exactly what I was looking for. After reading and keeping thus audio as a recourse I feel confident I can be a Montessori style parent.
