Publisher's Summary

From the wildly popular bestselling author of The Keeper of Lost Things—an uplifting, slightly magical story about how it’s never too late to find out who you really are.

"Ruth Hogan is the queen of uplifting fiction and Madame Burova reminds us why. The writing crackles with humor and warmth. I can't imagine a better book in which to lose yourself at the moment. Stunning, immersive and absolutely wonderful." --Annie Lyons, author of The Brilliant Life of Eudora Honeysett

Madame Burova—beloved Tarot reader, palmist, and clairvoyant—is retiring and leaving her booth on the Brighton seafront.

After inheriting her mother’s fortune-telling business as a young woman, Imelda Burova has spent her life on the Brighton pier practicing her trade. She and her trusty pack of Tarot cards have seen the lovers and the liars, the angels and the devils, the dreamers and the fools. Now, after a lifetime of keeping other people’s secrets, Madam Burova is ready to have a little piece of life for herself. But she still has one last thing to do—to fulfill a promise made in the 1970s, when she and her girlfriends were carefree, with their whole lives still before them.

In London, it is time for another woman to make a fresh start. Billie has lost her university job, her marriage, and her place in the world when a sudden and unlikely discovery leaves her very identity in question. Determined to find answers, she must follow a trail…which leads to Brighton, the pier, and directly to Madame Burova’s door.

In a story spanning over fifty years, Ruth Hogan has conjured a magical world of 1970s holiday camps and seaside entertainers, eccentrics, heroes and villains, the lost and the found. Young people will make careless choices which echo down the years….but it’s never too late to put things right.

Trigger warning

This story is both magnificent and heartbreaking. At first, I had a little trouble keeping all the characters straight and had to someone re-reading, but it moved along nicely after that. I do have to issue a trigger warning here: the story has some scenes of animal cruelty that will disturb some and that almost made me abandon the book altogether. I understand why it was chosen as a plot point, but could really have done without it.

Great Little Story!

I don't often write reviews, but I seriously enjoyed this book. A good story, wonderful character development, some sweet young romance, and an imaginative setting. To me, that says it all!

I'm always listening to Audio books. So many times i find the books are lacking in some measure. I didn't feel that way about this one. If you enjoy listening to a good story, you'll like this book.

my thanks to Ruth Hogan, Nina Wadia, and Audible!

Ruth Hogan does it again!

I absolutely loved The Keeper of Lost Things, it has become my safe place and I listen to it at least once a year! When I found The Moon, the Stars, and Madam Burova I got so excited and Ruth did not disappoint! Written with as much compassion and thought as the Keeper, this is a roller coaster of emotions that was a joy to listen to!!!

Too many separate stories

If it weren't for the reader I erlang have made it through. there were too many separate stories that never connected.

Sweet with a twist

I enjoyed this newest Ruth Hogan book. The narrator tended to laugh through much of the dialogue, and it definitely portrayed characters as good-natured, though was a bit unusual to do that so frequently. For some reason there were some skips for glitches in the audio that I’ve not experienced in the past, but overall it was a pleasant story and experience!
