Story
From the outside, Essie’s life looks idyllic: a loving husband, a beautiful house in a good neighborhood, and a nearby mother who dotes on her grandchildren. But few of Essie’s friends know her secret shame: that in a moment of maternal despair, she once walked away from her newborn, asleep in her carriage in a park. Disaster was avoided, and Essie got better, but she still fears what lurks inside her, even as her daughter gets older and she has a second baby.

Story
It’s hard meeting your ex after so much time apart. You remember the tears and accusations, the desperate look on his face as he punched the wall, but you try not to show it. You smile politely, even while your heart beats faster. You watch as he looks down into the stroller, at the beautiful blond-haired, blue-eyed baby kicking his little legs in the sunshine, whose innocent smile lights up your world. You see his face change. You know what he’s thinking. The next day he calls. His voice is shaking. He wants the truth. Is it his child?

With few options, she asks her adult son to move home, but it’s not quite the reunion she hoped for. Hudson is taciturn, moody, and frequently gone. Publisher's Summary
A twisty, compelling new audiobook about one woman's complicated relationship with her mother-in-law that ends in death....
From the moment Lucy met her husband's mother, she knew she wasn’t the wife Diana had envisioned for her perfect son. Exquisitely polite, friendly, and always generous, Diana nonetheless kept Lucy at arm’s length despite her desperate attempts to win her over. And as a pillar in the community, an advocate for female refugees, and a woman happily married for decades, no one had a bad word to say about Diana...except Lucy.
That was five years ago.
Now, Diana is dead, a suicide note found near her body claiming that she no longer wanted to live because of the cancer wreaking havoc inside her body.
But the autopsy finds no cancer. It does find traces of poison, and evidence of suffocation.
Who could possibly want Diana dead?
Why was her will changed at the 11th hour to disinherit both of her children and their spouses? And what does it mean that Lucy isn’t exactly sad she’s gone?
Fractured relationships and deep family secrets grow more compelling with every chapter in this twisty, captivating new audiobook from Sally Hepworth.
What the critics say
“Deliciously entertaining, this Australian novel is packed with wit and suspense, and it also delivers sharp insights about family dynamics and love.” (People Magazine)

A Light beach book
Someone who recommended this book loves it so much they couldn’t put it down. I found it pleasant but not very enticing. I kept on more for curiosity than interest but a good light beach book.

Just enough drama to keep me hooked
I really enjoyed the story and the complexities that happen in relationships
between mother and daughter-in-laws. This book wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be,
but great reading none the less! Sally Hepworth does it again!

Loved it!
This was a fantastic novel by Sally Hepworth. As always, she writes about some pretty heavy topics but in an entertaining way. This book was kind of a mystery, mostly family drama, with a little humor as well. I enjoyed the development of most characters and it kept me guessing at times. A great listen!

thought provoking
the relationships in this book are well thought out. Each female character has a voice and perspective that is relatable to the reader although not always with each other. a powerful reminder that what you don't say can become the greatest source of miscommunication. the narration was excellent.
