Publisher's Summary

It was just one night.
It was just one mistake.

FBI Agent Noah Downing had questions about his sexuality that a single night in Vegas should have answered. But dawn finds him on a plane back to Iowa, back on the trail of a vicious serial killer who disappeared six years ago and has suddenly resurfaced. There's nothing like a murder investigation to escape an existential crisis.

FBI profiler Cole Kennedy is still reeling after finding a heart-stopping connection with a seemingly perfect man, only for him to vanish. When he's sent to Iowa to profile the killer terrorizing America's heartland, he finds more questions than answers - both about the murderer and about Noah, the last man he ever expected to see again.

A twisted secret stretches between Cole and Noah, tangled with questions they both have about each other. But now, thrown together, they'll have to unravel the killer's profile and follow his trail...back to the very beginning, to where everyone's questions are answered once and for all.

This is an M|M romantic suspense stand-alone novel, featuring a second chance romance, the hunt for a twisted serial killer, and one man's journey to acceptance. Eighty thousand words.

Very hetero centric

Thought the story revolves around a two guys it’s too much of traditional « hetero » story. The performance is better than the story.

Cute Romance+Criminal Minds= This Book

I will say I was a bit skeptical when I was first considering buying this book. I purchased another book that touted itself as a Crime Thriller and a Romance novel but out of the 49 chapters, the crime was finished by Chapter 18, and the rest was one of the characters humming and hawing on whether he was gay or not, and if he wanted to be with the guy. THIS BOOK WAS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. The book had 2 characters that had you falling in love with them, a Murder that was believable and carried on throughout the book, The level of detail was a astounding but yet never felt like the author spent 3 pages describing the look of a one tree, AND THE TWISTS!!! This was what I wanted from an audiobook!! The Narrator, John Solo, really made the book come to life. I’m not a fan of a single narrated stories when it comes to a romance book but I have to say, if John Solo narrates any book It is more than likely I will be buying it. He doesn’t just narrates but he makes the vocal gestures that you know what the characters are doing like sighing, chuckling while talking, the sadness and anger. The emotion that he portrays heavily makes you think that this was narrated by a cast of a Broadway show. If you’re like me and like an equal plot to romance/erotic ratio, you have your book. If you want an episode of Criminal Minds episode where Reid and Hotchner get together? You have your book. Enjoy!

Wow

This was my first book by Tal Bauer & the first one I've heard John Solo narrate. Both of them knocked it out of the park. This was an excellent mystery with a perfect twist I didn't see coming (and I always see them coming). A lot of the time in romantic suspense, the romance part really suffers for the mystery, but not here. Bauer seamlessly weaves them together, fully realizing both plotlines. Solo's performance was flawless, emotional, and perfect. A definite reread.

Okay story, awful narrator

The written book is probably better than the audio because the mannerisms of the narrator were annoying and ruined a lot of the book for me. Not only does the narrator not do a very good job with multiple voices (they’re all similar enough they’re often indistinguishable), he also has an odd acting formula (overly whispery or overly aggressive plus stunted speech alternating with frantic speaking that I think is supposed to make things seem more intense but actually just sounds obnoxious and over-acted). And he can’t voice women, especially teenagers without them sounding like whiny parodies. The narrator also doesn’t seem to understand punctuation because there isn’t any pausing at the end of sentences so the book resembled a collection of 15-minute-long run-on sentences.

The story had an interesting mystery and if it had stuck with that plot then the book probably would have been above average. Unfortunately, the mystery took a back seat to the character development and romance. I was so fed up with Noah’s whiny, poor, unlovable me persona, that I came very close to not being able to finish the book. I understand insecurities (believe me, do I ever) but this went beyond most otherwise well-adapted, mature adults with a smattering of neuroticism or insecurities, to a full-fledged ‘I’m not sure this person is capable of coping with life on his own’ lack of confidence and quite possibly clinical depression. I doubt the author had that intention, but the written dialogue combined with the whiny tendencies of the narrator made the character mostly just pathetically needy instead of an average person with relatable insecurities.

All-in-all, the book could have been a decent or average read if not for the narrator and with a less sorry for himself MC.

Flawless

One of the things I love about John Solo is how he can take a book I’ve read and loved, and make me love it even more. Not for the first time, I’ve had different reactions to scenes while listening than I did while reading, and it surprises me each time in the best way. He takes a wonderful book, and makes it more. Especially this one.

This author and this narrator are a one-of-kind experience. I look forward to them working together again.

The narrator was perfect for this book!

Story was great but the audio narrator? He made this book brilliant! You could feel the emotions in his voice and made it worth my money!

This book had everything except spaceships.

....but that's totally fine because the author wrote excellently with a fantastic plot and the narrator was totally on point.

Absolute perfection, as always

I don’t know how to improve upon a Tal Bauer audiobook. Everything he writes is golden. Pair that with John Solo as narrator and you have the perfect winning combination. I am so sad that Tal is no longer offering his books in audio format so I am going to treasure every one that I have. Such a shame, because they are a an incredible gift to his readers. This was a fabulous story: the mystery, the angst, the relationship between Cole and Noah. I loved every bit of it. Highly recommended.

Great Read

Loved the book, but the audio cut out for almost half the last part of the book. Had to switch to reading.

Aside from the audio not working, the book was exciting, suspenseful, and intriguing. It kept me hooked and on the edge of my seat.

Can’t wait to start the sequel.

I concur...awful narrator

I wasn't going to get the narration but did ignoring the reviews and I really shouldn't have. While the narrator is expressive (and that's a huge plus) he also had an odd speaking style. Too many pauses, over-pronounciation of letters, the way he said "Vegas" was off, the way he did Katie's dialogue was terrible. However his narration of their sex scene in Noah's house was very well done and accurate! Apart from the narration the book was okay. I would've liked more information on Andy Garrett and why he did what he did. I also thought the book super lagged the last few chapters. The breakdown of their short term long distance relationship was unnecessary, to me and at that point I just wanted the book to wrap up. I did like their relationship even though Noah's hot/cold started to irk me. Solid 3 stars.
