Publisher's Summary

Modern-day Atlanta. Driven by his tragic past, prosecutor Chance Meridian seeks justice for a beautiful woman brutally murdered in her own home.

Except nothing comes easy in Atlanta, and certainly not justice. A lot of people in town wanted Sara Barton dead, and every single one of them is lying about something. Chance shouldn't be surprised. Murder is an ugly business. But so is love.

Masterful, fast-paced, and full of intrigue, The Murder of Sara Barton is an intense courtroom drama brimming with suspense.

Gripping Coutroom Drama

It took me a couple chapters to get into this audiobook, but the complex, interesting characters and plot carried me away. McMillan has done a great job depicting life in Georgia as a backdrop. Even if you figure out the 'whodunnit" aspect, this is definitely a well written, well narrated book.

Quite enjoyable!

Surprisingly enjoyed the legal insight during the trials. The plot kept me guessing all the way to the end, and the narrator's delivery brought more than one chuckle out of me. I look forward to book 2.

Great listen!

What a great listen! Crime and lawyer drama in one. Kept me guessing till near the end. I think my “light bulb” came on the same time the lead characters did.

Riveting

Fantastic narration and a compelling story that hooked me from the start. Great courtroom scenes. Good twists. The epilogue was a bit….I dunno… didn’t love it. But it’s the only flaw in an otherwise flawless book. Will purchase the next in the series.

Meh. Acceptable 'Plus' selection

One-time Trial Lawyer & Author Lance McMillian fashions a Mystery/Legal Thriller where the defense strategy is to capitalize on Reasonable Doubt by providing a litany of alternative killers for the jury to consider. Atlanta Prosecutor 'Chance Meridian' gets uncomfortably +/- unethically personally involved in the case.. allowing McMillian to flesh out a thought-provoking Whodunit with plenty of plausible potential outcomes.
The on-the-stand testimony is well-paced & realistic, the vocabulary/prose is capable, and the characterization is effective.
Unfortunately, it's a little bit too hard to suspend disbelief (the judge allows too much leeway among the trial participants, for example), the true perpetrator is predictable (pretty much straight from the start), I was never captivated by the story (starting with the pedestrian crime), and I found myself not caring what happened to any of these awful people (my mind consequently wandered annoyingly frequently).

Reader Christopher Lane doesn't help the situation with a distinctly "average" performance, either. To be certain, his diction, timbre, cadence, tone, and voice-acting are creditable.. but nothing that any other professional narrator couldn't have delivered.

Altogether, 'The Murder of Sara Barton' only rates 4.5 stars out of 10. It was a reasonable distraction for a couple of frozen afternoons, I guess. Even for free, however, it wasn't particularly entertaining. If you spend a Credit on it, you're a fool.

Good Read

This was a very good story from beginning to end. I did figure it out but it was still entertaining listening to it unfold. The narrator was eloquent. He portrayed the the characters and captured their emotions very well.
