Seventeen-year-old Alice and her mother have spent most of Alice’s life on the road, always a step ahead of the uncanny bad luck biting at their heels. But when Alice’s grandmother, the reclusive author of a cult-classic book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her estate, the Hazel Wood, Alice learns how bad her luck can really get: Her mother is stolen away - by a figure who claims to come from the Hinterland, the cruel supernatural world where her grandmother's stories are set. Story
In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box. But when the Eastwood sisters - James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna - join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement.

As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

Story
Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned. As a huntsman of the Church, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. But when Lou pulls a wicked stunt, the two are forced into an impossible situation - marriage. Lou, unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, must make a choice. And love makes fools of us all.

But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.

Publisher's Summary
"In this sequel to The Hazel Wood, narrator Rebecca Soler returns to breathe life into Alice, who has now escaped from the magical story-fueled world of the Hinterland...Soler's narration brims with Alice's anger and grit, her conflicting emotions spilling into every word." (AudioFile magazine)
"A must-read for fans of portal fantasies, mysteries, and readers who prefer their magic with bloody sharp edges." (Booklist, starred review)
The highly anticipated sequel to Melissa Albert’s beloved New York Times best-selling debut, The Hazel Wood!
In The Night Country, Alice Proserpine dives back into a menacing, mesmerizing world of dark fairy tales and hidden doors. Follow her and Ellery Finch as they learn The Hazel Wood was just the beginning, and that worlds die not with a whimper, but a bang.
With Finch’s help, Alice escaped the Hinterland and her reclusive grandmother’s dark legacy. Now, she and the rest of the dregs of the fairy tale world have washed up in New York City, where Alice is trying to make a new, unmagical life. But something is stalking the Hinterland’s survivors - and she suspects their deaths may have a darker purpose. Meanwhile, in the winking out world of the Hinterland, Finch seeks his own adventure, and - if he can find it - a way back home....
Praise for The Night Country:
"The Night Country is a new modern classic for thrill seekers young and old. A stunning sequel filled with wondrous delights and daring forays into the dark. Not to be missed!" (Kim Liggett, author of The Grace Year)

flowery
It wasn't bad. The story was pretty interesting, the ending was nice. The writing, though, ruined it for me. It was excessively flowery. Way too many adjectives, adverbs, similes and metaphors, practically one every line! It was grating and exhausting.
It was also very much a teenage-girl-who-feels-like-an-intellectual-artiste book. Which is fine. There is nothing wrong with that, it's a legit genre and I'm not going to make fun of it, I'm just really not the target audience.

The Sequel to Hazelwood
I’m not a sequel person, however, The Hazel Wood left me with an eerie yearning for more of Albert’s writing. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. The first book was dark and had me hanging on every word. I was afraid this book would fall short (as many sequels do), but the writer was able to recapture the dark atmosphere of the hinterland and bring more nightmares to life in this sequel. I recommend this book and series and look forward to whatever tales the writer wants to “spin” next.
