Publisher's Summary

Harry Bosch and LAPD Detective Renee Ballard come together again on the murder case that obsessed Bosch's mentor, the man who trained him - new from number one New York Times best-selling author Michael Connelly

Back when Harry Bosch was just a rookie homicide detective, he had an inspiring mentor who taught him to take the work personally and light the fire of relentlessness for every case. Now that mentor, John Jack Thompson, is dead, but after his funeral his widow hands Bosch a murder book that Thompson took with him when he left the LAPD 20 years before - the unsolved killing of a troubled young man in an alley used for drug deals.

Bosch brings the murder book to Renée Ballard and asks her to help him find what about the case lit Thompson's fire all those years ago. That will be their starting point.

The bond between Bosch and Ballard tightens as they become a formidable investigation team. And they soon arrive at a worrying question: Did Thompson steal the murder book to work the case in retirement, or to make sure it never got solved?

Another read well worth the time.

After reading all of Michael Conelly's Harry Bosch related novels the continuation and addition of Renee Ballard is seamless and exciting the two of them are investigation personified. They are great together and their skills beyond measure.. I hope Michael Connelly continues this liason and allows the two of them to pick up and solve the many forgotten Crimes that plague the city. Keep up the good writing and please please continue the pairing. Great read great story lines.

fplot with lots of twists

for me, the technical aspects of detective work and court proceedings added a lot of interest beyond the whodunnit theme.

Another winner

Complex and layered with a full cast of favorite and well developed characters. Both narrators excellent but the piecing together of their dialogues seemed stilted- obviously recorded separately which took something away from the feeling of connectedness between Bosch and Ballard. I wish Michael Connelly had referenced Rene’s dog near the end. An important part of her life and a “character” which seemed to fall by the story’s wayside.

not his best work

This is a female book. It's really soft for a Michael Connelly novel. It reads like a TV drama. I wo t be recommending it except as a quick beach vacation listen.

HARRY, WHERE ART THOU?

Simply awful. Endlessly Boring, anti-climactic ending, and overall plodding, dull and except for Titus Wellover's performance, the worst Bosch book Connelly has ever written. VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!

Excellent

Well read in alternating chapters that make the build up from two points of view more than doubly affective. Great last minute twist, thrilling confrontation with the bad guy and the friendship between Bosch and Ballard add up to a great story.
