Story
Early one morning on the shore of the Thames, DCI Samuel Owusu is called to the scene of a gruesome discovery. When Owusu sends the evidence for examination, he learns the bones are connected to a cold case that left three people dead on the kitchen floor in a Chelsea mansion thirty years ago. Rachel Rimmer has also received a shock—news that her husband, Michael, has been found dead in the cellar of his house in France. All signs point to an intruder, and the French police need her to come to answer questions about Michael and his past that she very much doesn’t want to answer.

Melville Heights is one of the nicest neighborhoods in Bristol, England. It’s the sort of place where doctors and lawyers and old-money academics live. It’s not the sort of place where people get stabbed in the back 30 times with a kitchen knife in their own homes. Someone must have seen something. Newlywed Joey Mullen, for example, recently returned from four years of working in Ibiza. She and her husband, Alfie, are eager to find a place of their own in her hometown. But Joey finds herself distracted by the man next door, Tom Fitzwilliam.

Publisher's Summary
A 2022 Audie Award Finalist
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Then She Was Gone comes “her best thriller yet” (Harlan Coben, New York Times bestselling author) about a young couple’s disappearance on a gorgeous summer night, and the mother who will never give up trying to find them.
On a beautiful summer night in a charming English suburb, a young woman and her boyfriend disappear after partying at the massive country estate of a new college friend.
One year later, a writer moves into a cottage on the edge of the woods that border the same estate. Known locally as the Dark Place, the dense forest is the writer’s favorite place for long walks and it’s on one such walk that she stumbles upon a mysterious note that simply reads, “DIG HERE.”
Could this be a clue towards what has happened to the missing young couple? And what exactly is buried in this haunted ground?
“Utterly gripping with richly drawn, hugely compelling characters, this is a first-class thriller with heart” (Lucy Foley, New York Times bestselling author) that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
What the critics say
"Froggatt works to bring distinctive voices to the key players and is particularly effective at voicing Kim, who is now caring for her grandson because her daughter has disappeared. She also shifts effortlessly to the posh accents of the wealthy neighbors. Jewell provides listeners with appealing and well-rounded personalities and atmospheric settings. This thriller will keep listeners engaged." (AudioFile Magazine)

The narration was FANTASTIC! I felt gripped by this novel from the first chapter…. So many twists and turns… some I will admit I predicted, but still left me with a sense of AWE when it happened!
Fantastically done… I would listen again!

Oh my… gave me chills
I’m already a fan of Ms. Jewell but she really outdid herself on this book. I enjoyed every single moment!
This is a mystery, heavily character driven as is her signature style.
It very much sets her books apart from others ,especially in this genre, which has a tendency to be made up of very one dimensional ppl.
Also, I need a book that not only entertains me but makes me feel something. This one has all of those feels. For me , this is an example of a book that ticks all of the boxes.
It’s very hard to just rewrite the blurb because the book is so much more. Sometimes it’s better to just dive in. As described it is a missing persons story of which there are many ,but as I said, that doesn’t do it justice. I don’t think a synopsis from me would really help you decide. If you like her style of writing you will love this book.
Now the wait until the next one!

Great characters and suspense
This latest Lisa Jewell book is great. Like most of her books, it flips from present day back and forth to the recent past, but it is easy to follow. It has great development of characters and their relationships. It has great suspense as what happened is gradually revealed. It will hold your interest until the end. And it wraps up every thread of the story. I highly recommend this book.

Confusing ridiculous story
The story jumps around so much that it was extremely difficult to track, especially as an audiobook. It continually jumps between time periods and characters yet the narrator was always the same so if you missed that one chapter transition you had no idea where you were. The ending felt like the author was under time pressure to tie up the story and came up with just a ridiculous ending. I finished it but only because I’m in bed with a broken foot and had nothing else to do.
