Publisher's Summary

"The Nowhere Child is a well-written thriller that avoids the clichés of the genre. The characters are interesting and believable and the book kept me reading up to the satisfying conclusion." (Phillip Margolin, New York Times best-selling author of The Third Victim)

Winner of the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award, The Nowhere Child is screenwriter Christian White’s internationally best-selling debut thriller of psychological suspense about a woman uncovering devastating secrets about her family - and her very identity....

Kimberly Leamy is a photography teacher in Melbourne, Australia. Twenty-six years earlier, Sammy Went, a two-year-old girl vanished from her home in Manson, Kentucky. An American accountant who contacts Kim is convinced she was that child, kidnapped just after her birthday. She cannot believe the woman who raised her, a loving social worker who died of cancer four years ago, crossed international lines to steal a toddler.

On April 3, 1990, Jack and Molly Went’s daughter Sammy disappeared from the inside their Kentucky home. Already estranged since the girl’s birth, the couple drifted further apart as time passed. Jack did his best to raise and protect his other daughter and son while Molly found solace in her faith. The Church of the Light Within, a Pentecostal fundamentalist group that handles poisonous snakes as part of its worship, provided that faith. Without Sammy, the Wents eventually fell apart.

Now, with proof she and Sammy are in fact the same person, Kim travels to America to reunite with a family she never knew she had. And to solve the mystery of her abduction - a mystery that will take her deep into the dark heart of religious fanaticism where she must fight for her life against those determined to save her soul....

the No Where Child

The book captured my attention immediately. Parts of descriptions of snakes was too much so skipped parts of it.

I loved this book, it’s hard to believe this is a first work by Christian White. I intend to read as much as he’s willing to write. I also loved the narrator, well done. This book has lots of twists and turns to keep you interested.

A Stunningly Exciting Listen with a Deft Narrator

This is an "on the edge of your seat" kind of listen. I do not know the writer's work, and have never heard the narrator before, but was instantly drawn in by a thriller told in two time periods. The story is exciting and beautifully written; the narrator is deeply skilled, immediately relatable, and draws you in. I was so glad I had the chance to listen to this fantastic book. Great psychological thriller, great narrator. Intense and perfectly paced.

Surprised by the great reviews...

I had to read this for a book club and found it to be very wordy and with too many descriptions that weren't relevant, or just slowed the story down. When I got about a third of the way in and heard about snakes, that pretty much did me in and wanted to quit, but I plodded along. The end was a surprise, so that was good, but all in all it was just slow and too many creepy people in the story. The radical religious aspects REALLY turned me off.

Not Everything is What it Seems

This story wowed me, which is something that I do not say too often. There was so many of the unknowns and when you thought you had something in your head, the book went in a totally different direction.

The main character, Kim Leamy, is met by a man, who claimed she was a missing child, Sammy Went, who had been missing for 26 yrs. Turns out the man, was her brother, Stu, and he had a DNA test to confirm their relations while visiting her in her current home area of Australia. This journey of Kim finding out what happened to her as a 2yr being kidnapped, had so many moving parts that you literally would be wondering what would and could happen next.

This was my first book by Christian White and now must read his other books. The narration was completed by Katherine Litterell, who was unbelievable with doing both Australian and English (American) accents throughout the book....simply amazing!!

I wish there was more than 5 stars

What an absolute brilliant book! Loved it! This was the first time for me listening to this author and narrator, I can not wait for Christian White's next book, I think anything he writes will be just as brilliant, I might have just added another Mystery writer to my favourites list. Never once was this story predictable or what I expected!

Now the narrator she was just amazing, I don't think I have the words to convey how well this book has been narrated, her voice kept me captivated and wanting more, if it wasn't for sleep I would have completed this book in one go. I now have a new favourite narrator! Katherine Littrell's accents was spot on, I actually wonder what her nationality is as she could pass for both. The switch between characters and accents, Brilliant! I have never experienced such awesomeness!

I would recommend this book to absolutely anybody who wants a good mystery read, and if you want to spoil your ears definitely get yourself the audiobook!

Insanely Good!

I can not even begin to tell you how insanely good this listen is!!!! First off, the narration. The main character is from Australia so not only do we get to enjoy that accent for nearly 10 hours, the narrator also very effectively delivered American accents, both male and female. This was such a treat to listen to!!

The story was every bit a mystery thriller. Every. Bit. We kinda know but not really Kim/Sami's true identity and then when that gets resolved, we kinda know but not really who kidnapped her, and then when that gets resolved, the big reveal!!!!. It was glorious! The chapters went back and forth from present day to the time of the crime and that held the mystery and suspense in constant motion.

I liked some parts of the ending but not others. It was in no way a clean wrap up. It was a true-to-life mix of good and bad.

Great Psychological Suspense

Full of twists and turns, this book has the perfect mix of suspense and drama. While it followed the typical plotline of a great psychological work, it had its own unique aspects. I don’t want to give any spoilers away, but I will say that this book will keep you guessing. Just when you think you know who the bad guy is, you’ll have the rug yanked out from underneath your feet. The author was inspired by Gillian Flynn to write this piece and it shows.

Since I listened to the audiobook, I also got to hear Katherine Littrell’s smooth narration.

Fantastic story. Recommended to all Gillian Flynn, Ruth Ware, and Mary Kubica fans.
