Publisher's Summary

The Old Testament - written in ancient Israel by many different authors over the course of a thousand years - has had more meaning to more people than any other book the world has known. Its influence, whether you consider it scripture or literature, is evident everywhere in our culture, from medieval mystery plays to modern novels, art, music, theater, film, and dance. What can this work teach us about those who wrote it? About the people we once were? And can new academic understanding also speak to faith? As Professor Levine observes: "The Old Testament is endlessly fascinating because it offers everything to explore: myth, saga, and history; tragedy, comedy, and farce; economics and politics; literature and poetry of surpassing beauty; court intrigue and prophetic morality; heavenly miracles and sometimes heavenly silence; questions of theodicy; answers that satisfy and answers that may not; destruction and rebuilding; despair and hope."

In a series of 24 lively lectures, she takes you down all of these avenues, exploring selected passages from the texts known as the Old Testament, the Hebrew Bible, and the Tanakh, revealing how fresh research and findings from scholars of archaeology, cross-cultural studies, and comparative religion can deepen your understanding.

And though the focus of her lectures is on historical and literary issues, Professor Levine does not shy away from issues of religious concern, maintaining that the goal of an academic course is not to undermine religious faith, but to use that academic knowledge as a new source of insight into the writings that form a believer's spiritual bedrock.

Too much analysis, missed big stories

I listened to the whole course because it was interesting nonetheless, but I expected it to be a summary of the happenings in the Old Testament. Instead, it is a deep analysis into certain aspects of the culture and the state of mind the authors and society must have been in at the time of writing. So much analysis that I find it often skips over important parts of the old testament to focus more on source explanations.

If you’re looking for a deep dive into the less known socio-cultural values and history of the time, as well as a psychological analysis of various characters, then you’re gonna love this series. If you’re looking for a summary of the Old Testament, this ain’t it.

An Excellent and Informative Overview

A rich fast-paced look through the Old Testament that is informative and entertaining. For those familiar and those unfamiliar with the ancient scriptures of the Jewish people, this lecture series provides much to be learned. Levine does a great job of giving the overview, but not being afraid to stop and look at the many fascinating details within the biblical narrative. Levine brings history, literature, archeology, and poetry and blends them all together. A great 12 hour listen.

Academic and Excellent overall

Too many personal opinions for my taste but that is subjective. I think it would benefit from audio editing to clear the “umm,” heavy breathing, and match the gap between when the speaker speaks very softly then very loudly which can make it difficult to stick to one volume. Aside from these very minor elements, this was quality course and I enjoyed every lecture. Each lecture added something new or at least a new dimension to something I knew even though I studied this in the past multiple times in the course of my studies.

Not actually interested in hearing someone else's

No, I didn't like it very much because I don't want to listen to someone else talking about how they feel about it! I thought I would be hearing it as it is written? Not the way I heard it! Not happy about that either! ok so please don't hesitate to ask for a waaaaaaaay better version of the old testament! Ciao!

Here’s why I’m not liking this one much

I wanted to hear more about any historical context there might be around these writings. It is already clear to me that this just someone walking through the pages of the books and giving their own interpretation of it. But anyone could just get a bible and do that themselves. I don’t really find her interpretation any more insightful than my own so i have gravitated towards the new testament books by Bart “something” in the great courses series. I am enjoying those much more because it provides a much more historical account of the books, and a structured understanding of how they were canonized, etc. I understand that is much harder to do with writings that are up to 1200 years older, but it would be nice to find a little more of a historical background study of the times, and how they were canonized etc. if possible. It would be nice if someone could do what Bart does the new testament books to the old testament, as opposed to just a walkthrough of the contents. Even just whatever history we DO know.
