Story
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Actually wondered if I was going to enjoy it!
As I got further into it, the story just kept getting better and better. Although a lot of sadness in the story, I enjoyed the comical sarcasm from Heather when she sometimes commented on a situation. The end was a surprise, and I hadn’t figured out “Who done it”, until Heather’s last encounter with Don! That kind of sealed it for me. Great book!

Captivating
I wasn’t sure about JD Kirk’s latest book because it was narrated by some who was not Angus King. I thought I might have to read it instead of listed because no matter what I was going to read it. I was delighted that it was as good as all the others and the narrator did a great job. The story moved along nicely with strong characters. I couldn’t stop listening!

REALLY DISLIKE NARRATOR
Although I’m in the minority, I really dislike Angus King’s narration. When he tries to alter his voice for another character, it sounds so unbelievably cartoonish. I can’t effectively rate the story because I had to stop listening after just a few chapters.

Not quite as good as other 2 series
I liked many things about this book although I was not a Heather fan when she appeared in the Jack Logan series. The plot is complex and has many surprises up until the end. The narrator did a good job with the accents and the smarmy characters like DCI Grant but she was wrong for Heather. She sounds too young and innocent. Give us Angus King! I felt that Heather made a lot of poor decisions for a former DCI that endangered the case.

How does he do it?
JD Kirk took one of the most hated characters from the DCI Logan series and turned her into my new favorite DI. Cathleen McCarron delivers a superb performance. Looking forward to the next installment!

Love the JD Kirk Universe
Heather is a complicated character that makes her a realistic heroine of this story. It keeps you guessing, had the humor you’d expect, and included characters you can love. I am hoping for more of Heather and Ace.

Oh, no you didn’t …
Heather Filson was such a disagreeable character in the Logan books—a sad stereotype past her sell-by date. (I think there is at least one of her on every force, and they’re all tedious in exactly the same way.) I found her so distasteful that, despite my high regard for JD Kirk and his work, I put off even looking at this book for a good while. How am I supposed to like her or care about her for an entire novel? She’s no Bob Hoon, after all. But … whatever curiosity did to the cat, it also got the better of me. And damned if the story didn’t deliver! That’s two negatives for a serious positive … I’m going to re-read or -listen, as the case may be, so I can go back and enjoy the Kirkian touches. But I had to get to the end fast the first time! I can’t say yet that I really like Heather, but now she has some context, and it helps. I’d love to see another novel with her in the middle—though I might be more squarely on Team Ace at this point!

Very Good!
Heather! Out there doing her thing!! I enjoyed every single DCI Logan book in the series and every Bob Hoon, and am looking forward to reading all of the DI Heather Filson novels! Great characters, hilariously funny in parts, excellent stories.
I will say that the narrator has to grow on me a bit more— just not what I’m hearing in my head, but that probably has to do more with hearing her in a man’s voice from the Logan novels!
Overall, great and I am already wishing I could begin the next one!

Heather needs to talk to someone and work on her anger issues
I love both the DCI Logan series and Bob Hoon series. The characters are so likable, funny and smart. The storylines draw me in and keep me entertained and on the edge of my seat. Heather, however, is so antagonistic and rude, runs around making poor and usually incorrect decisions/choices, bullying everyone and making herself more and more persona non grata among her peers, families & friends of victims, basically anyone she encounters throughout the book. She’s supposed to be a detective chief inspector/detective inspector?! If she had been even slightly polite, approached situations in a more intuitive or empathetic manner, took a minute to think things through she might have solved the case a lot sooner. Instead she insulted everyone and left me disliking her enough that I’ll stick with Logan & Hoon and give this series a miss in future.

Didn't see that coming!!
I was fully prepared dislike this narrator before she spoke one word, but I was pleasantly surprised. Angus will always be my favorite, but she did "Officer" Fillson (sp?) justice. An excellent story all the way around and I was taken very much by surprise at the ending. Looking forward to more in this series!!
