Publisher's Summary

Can you ever really know someone? When Deborah, an unpopular 17-year-old, meets the charming and handsome Larry, he sweeps her off her feet. The trouble is, Larry has a secret. Then a series of grisly murders casts a shadow over everything. As Deborah's world starts to fall apart, she begins to suspect the man she loves of a terrible betrayal. And to keep their marriage alive, sacrifices must be made. The Optician's Wife is a compelling psychological thriller that unpacks what goes on behind closed doors and reminds us that sometimes the worst crimes can take place closer to home than you think.

What the critics say

"The Optician's Wife is a stylish, brilliantly crafted thriller which really delivers. A very real sense of creeping dread, combined with intelligent, finely drawn characters, had me turning the pages late into the night." (J. Ross, bestselling author of The DCI Ryan books)

Inside the mind of a killer

I read the reviews on Goodreads for this book prior to actually reading it because of the one star rating in audible, and now at the end of the book I see why that 1 start rating was there but I'm on the flip side. Because I looked at the book from a different point of view.

Some of the reviews found Deborah's character development unbelievable because they couldn't see how she evolved from a meek pushover to the person that she became by the end. In reality, someone can evolve from meek and a pushover into someone who is malicious or violent. It's shown in countless true crime stories where all it needs is a match, someone whose dangerous personality draws the other person in and ignites some hidden desire for violence. think of the green river killer or others similar.

True, Deborah's personality switches almost immediately, and that is unrealistic, But if the personality change was seen over a longer period of time, it doesn't seem as unrealistic.

I will agree with most reviewers and say that the killer was detected almost immediately, but I didn't see this as a psychological thriller where you wanted to see who the killer was. I saw this as looking through the eyes of a killer. And with that switch you're not looking at figuring out who the killer is, you immediately know who the killer is, and what you're doing is you're going through their psyche. You're seeing how they try to blame others for everything they do. It was their fault for your actions mindset. You see the manipulation that they use on others, and you also see their amazing ability to act as if they're innocent. That is the mind of a killer, and that was shown through amazingly in this book, so for me. It's a 4 or 5 star book.

The narrator for this book was A++. I know from the reviews that the written book has many grammatical errors, but the audible version was done flawlessly !
