Story
When I arrive unannounced at my husband's studio in need of a shoulder to cry on after hearing that my best student, Alex, has died, I see a pair of wineglasses drying by the sink, and my deepest fear is confirmed: my husband is having an affair. Most women would fall to their knees in tears and throw him out of the house - but I just can't bring myself to do it. Instead, I go home and cook a healthy dinner for our children, walk the dog, and unload the dishwasher without complaint. I need this marriage to work to protect a terrible secret of my own....

Story
Fran finds her standing by the swings. A little girl, Esther, no older than seven years old, by herself in the dead of night, her pretty but old-fashioned yellow dress covered in grass stains and her hair dishevelled. She says she's waiting for Father, and that strikes Fran as particularly odd. After Esther is reunited with her family, Fran can't stop thinking about this pious child whose imaginary friend is God. Fran's instincts tell her something is very wrong. Why does Esther keep running away from home, and how did she get that bruise on her leg?

There are two sides to every story: yours and mine, ours and theirs, his and hers. Which means someone is always lying. Detective Jack Harper is suspicious of her involvement, until he becomes a suspect in his own murder investigation. Someone isn’t telling the truth, and some secrets are worth killing to keep.

The Other Wife is not what you think
Claire McGowan has written a primer on how to “gaslight” someone. Susie’s husband nIck distrust his wife after finding her caught in an affair. Having “forgiven“ her he unbeknownst to her monitors her every move. Moving her out of London into a remote area, Susie, now pregnant, is left alone during the day with no one around until a woman moves into one of the other cottages next-door.
Nora is the new neighbor. She is also the widow of Susie‘s lover. Thinking the child she carries is her husbands, NORA begins a campaign to ingratiate herself with Susie. Finding that NIck has been controlling Susie’s every move via electronic monitor, Nora, while not telling Susie, she encourages her to leave Nick,
NORA, thinking she would have a comfortable life with pensions, savings, and inheritance money, is rudely awakened by the lawyer who tells her there are no funds whatsoever. Her husband has been siphoning off funds for years and there’s nothing left.
Things escalate and there are many twists and turns. It makes you wonder how well you know those people in whom you have placed trust and love. This was a good read and the audio version was brilliantly performed.
