Story
There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices.

Imagine a breathing technique that can increase oxygen uptake and delivery to the cells, improve blood circulation, and unblock the nose. Perhaps it can help open the airways of the lungs, enhance blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain, improve sleep, and bring calmness to the mind. It might even restore bodily functions disturbed by stress, build greater resilience, and help you to live longer. You might think this description sounds farfetched. But it isn’t.

Story
It has never been harder to focus than it is now. We live in a noisy, crowded, stressful world that changes so fast, we’re always running to catch up. Traditional education doesn’t give us the skills to manage. And if you live largely in your own head, techniques like mindfulness fall short. In extremes, we turn to external solutions like social media, alcohol, and recreational drugs, just to get some space from our own thoughts.

Much of the Western world was completely unaware of the profound impact of the breath on the body and mind until the 1970s. It was during this time that Swami Rama astonished physiologists by demonstrating perfect control over his heart rate and brain waves. It was something Western scientists didn’t believe humans could possibly achieve. In this audiobook, Swami Rama shares some of the basic breathing techniques practiced by Himalayan yogis so that you too can experience the profound effects of pranayama and breath control.

Our ancestors crossed deserts, mountains, and oceans without even a whisper of what anyone today might consider modern technology. Those feats of endurance now seem impossible in an age where we take comfort for granted. But what if we could regain some of our lost evolutionary strength by simulating the environmental conditions of our forbears? Investigative journalist and anthropologist Scott Carney takes up the challenge to find out: Can we hack our bodies and use the environment to stimulate our inner biology?

Thrive or die: That's the rule of evolution. Despite this brutal logic, some species have learned to survive in even the most hostile conditions. Others couldn't - and perished. While incremental genetic adaptations hone the physiology of nearly every creature on this planet, there's another evolutionary force that is just as important: the power of choice. In this explosive investigation into the limits of endurance, journalist Scott Carney discovers how humans can wedge control over automatic physiological responses into the breaking point between stress and biology.

Holotropic means "moving toward wholeness," from the Greek holos (whole) and trepein (moving in the direction of). The breathwork utilizes the remarkable healing and transformative potential of non-ordinary states of consciousness. These states engender a rich array of experiences with unique healing potential - reliving childhood memories, infancy, birth and prenatal life, and elements from the historical and archetypal realms of the collective unconscious.

Publisher's Summary
A simple yet revolutionary approach to improving your body's oxygen use and increasing your health, weight loss, and sports performance - whether you're a recovering couch potato or an Ironman triathlon champion. With a foreword by New York Times best-selling author Dr. Joseph Mercola.
Achieve more with less effort: The secret to weight loss, fitness, and wellness lies in the most basic and most overlooked function of your body - how you breathe. One of the biggest obstacles to better health and fitness is a rarely identified problem: chronic overbreathing. We often take many more breaths than we need without realizing it, contributing to poor health and fitness, including a host of disorders, from anxiety and asthma to insomnia and heart problems.
In The Oxygen Advantage, the man who has trained over 5,000 people - including Olympic and professional athletes - in reduced breathing exercises now shares his scientifically validated techniques to help you breathe more efficiently. Patrick McKeown teaches you the fundamental relationship between oxygen and the body then gets you started with a body oxygen level test (BOLT) to determine how efficiently your body uses oxygen. He then shows you how to increase your BOLT score by using light breathing exercises and learning how to simulate high-altitude training, a technique used by Navy SEALs and professional athletes to help increase endurance, weight loss, and vital red blood cells to dramatically improve cardio fitness.
Following his program, even the most out-of-shape person (including those with chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma) can climb stairs, run for a bus, or play soccer without gasping for air, and everyone can achieve:
- Easy weight loss and weight maintenance
- Improved sleep and energy
- Increased concentration
- Reduced breathlessness during exercise
- Heightened athletic performance
- Improved cardiovascular health
- Elimination of asthmatic symptoms
- And more
With The Oxygen Advantage, you can look better, feel better, and do more - it's as easy as breathing.

Would of preferred more information about the science and history of breathing correctly. Way too much filler... This book should be 2 hours long max. Too bad, I was excited to listen to this after watching interviews with the author.

Phenomenal Eye Opening Book
Oxygen Advantage is a phenomenal eye opening book. It's a simple concept that in modern life we breathe too much oxygen and many of us who struggle with various activities (work, school, sports) do not breathe through our noses but through our mouthes. We also breathe heavily through our chests not our stomaches. This is not how nature intended!
I definitely am one of those people who breathes too much and regrettably through the mouth and chest. Over the last 5 years, after having two kids, my sleep quality has deteriorated, my concentration plummeted and my stress has risen. I often wondered what has happened to me?
After listening to OA I now know why. I am not breathing correctly and just getting into shape at the gym will not fix that!
I followed the techniques in this book and within a few short days my body picked up on what I was doing and took over. I am now breathing through my nose and stomach with relative ease during rest and could not be happier. My head is clear! I can't wait to keep making progress and see where life takes me.
I highly recommend others give this a listen and to apply the techniques. My wife said I am like I was 10 years ago.
Thank you Patrick for making this book into an audiobook.

A Fantastic book
I was hesitant to buy this audiobook as I wasn’t sure I could handle 9hours of breathing content. But it was a pleasure to listen to. Fascinating content and very helpful info. Didn’t get bored once and couldn’t turn it off. The narrator was exceptional. Struck the right balance. No pompousness, very good natured guy to listen to. (Must he the Irish accent) I highly recommend it to anyone interested in improving their training and general health.

Long-winded
An okay addition to booka that I've read on this subject. I like the emphasis on athletes and the prescribed exercises. Patrick is clearly passionate about his subject. However, could have been considerably shorter. Tends to read more like a sales pitch for his program toward the end. Valuable info, but could have been communicated more efficiently.

Asthma free and Stress-less!
I have suffered from asthma symptoms since I began ice hockey at 4 years old. After following the advice in "Asthma Free Naturally" I was able to control my asthma medication free in just 7 weeks! The massive drop in my stress levels alone would have made me seek out more information! Intrigued, I bought the audiobook version of "The Oxygen Advantage" and completed the book in less than three days! The book was very well written with easy to follow programs and much needed background information on how I might continue to improve my breathing for athletic performance and all other aspects of my life. The book definitely focuses on endurance training, and i am more interested in calisthenics. However, after a brief email, the author (Patrick McKeown) himself emailed me back with ways to customize reduced breathing to strength training. I cannot recommend this book more highly to anyone with performance goals or anyone looking to feel better throughout their lives!

Incredibly enlightening.
Dear Patrick,
I heard you on a Podcast with Tina Muir a couple weeks ago, and was very interested. After doing some checking, thought I wanted to learn more. I downloaded your book through Audible. I’ve been a runner for a few years, and have run two full marathons , and ran nine miles of the Boston Marathon, I got heat stroke and was taken off the course. After that, I knew I needed something different to help me with running. And that ’s when I heard the podcast.
After listening to your book, I thought I would give it a try and see if it would help. It all made sense. I used to breath through my mouth, and was exhausted and slumped over after a race. Now when I run, I feel differently. During a hill workout last week, I had to mouth breath on the hills, but I would do a short breath hold between some of the intervals. Upon going back up the hill, the times when I had a breath hold of a few steps, my legs weren’t tired getting up the hill. My BOLT score was about 15 seconds, and now its nearing 25 seconds. When at work, I deliver mail, between houses, I would do breath holds. which are now getting to 30 paces before having to breath.
I’m running with an online group called The Run Experience, and there has been a new interest in your work there. People are all trying it now, comparing how they are all doing with it. I’m running in the Chicago Marathon in October, and am hoping to PR there with the help of your insight. So thanks very much for putting this out there.

Real deal
This keystone habit will have a effect on every aspect of your life. I'm a major coffee drinker and have now been cutting back because McKeown is right about the effects of caffeine on our breathing. Surprisingly though, the breathing has me mentally alert so I haven't missed it much. I strongly endorse the sleeping tips provided. I have felt more refreshed in the morning to where I don't run to the coffee. Read this book!

This is a must listen for everybody
The information in this book has to be heard by everybody. It was unknown to me that oxygen, and more importantly carbon dioxide, has such an influence on our life, ranging from appetite to orthodontics. The exercises in the book are well explained and can be started at any current level of fitness.

Excellent game changer
This book has made a great impact on me in only two weeks! The techniques are explained well and are easy for anyone to implement. I have stopped snoring according to my wife and I feel better in general. I have tried multiple devices to stop snoring and all of them failed. I think I will use these techniques the rest of my life.

Excellent
I had been a nose breather for about 50 years, but not anymore. I still tape my mouth at night and sometimes when I exercise. Following the advice in this audio book has done wonders for me. I was having trouble making myself walk, jog and run so I got the audio book Spark and that along with a Garmin vivofit 2 activity monitor was all I needed to get motivated.

Mouths are for eating, noses for breathing
Loved this audio version that I bought a hard copy. Breathe light to breathe right. Life changing stuff.

Interesting
A bit long-winded but interesting and seems legit and not a pseudo science gimmick. I'm encouraged to try the program and see how it affects me.
