À propos de cet audio
Today, Tipperary-born priest Patrick Ryan cuts a modest but strong figure, to the layperson. A man of God who has been entrusted with the confessions of hundreds of earnest parishioners. But in fact his story is dark, dramatic, and pivotal to Irish history, on both sides of the border.
In The Padre, award-winning investigative journalist Jennifer O'Leary exposes the paramilitary exploits of notorious former Catholic priest and active IRA supporter Patrick Ryan–exposing details which have, outside of his very guarded circles, been unknown until now.
Drawing on highly sensitive information, divulged by Ryan during exclusive secret meetings with the author, The Padre lifts the lid on the true extent of the priest's involvement with the IRA: from being the link between the organisation and the Gaddafi regime, to Ryan's connection to the failed assassination attempt on Margaret Thatcher and her cabinet.
The Padre tells the truly remarkably story of this man of the cloth, and his lifelong struggle with what he, in his heart, believes to be right and wrong.

Well researched Troubles story
The author has produced a well researched political history book concerning one figure who featured in the IRA campaign of terror against the British state in the period from 1969 through to the late 80s. Through Ryan’s biography she gives an overall timeline of the major events during that period that eventually lead to the Good Friday Agreement although that itself is not covered with the story of the Padre’s terrorist career finishing beforehand. I had forgotten just how brutal that bombing campaign had been even though I lived in London for several years during the peak horror. The most surprising aspect of this account is the extent of Libyan involvement reaching to the highest level. The reader/listener can make up their own mind as to the terrorist versus freedom fighter side of this debate. However to me it seems entirely antithetical that a man of the cloth wouldn’t think twice about the death of innocents. The British intelligence services, UK police and Interpol didn’t do well against an extremely cunning, ruthless and dedicated opponent in the guise of a Catholic priest.
