Publisher's Summary

Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N. Holmberg returns to the enchanting world of The Paper Magician.

Alvie Brechenmacher has arrived in London to begin her training in Polymaking - the magical discipline of bespelling plastic. Polymaking is the newest form of magic, and in a field where there is so much left to learn, every Polymaker dreams of making the next big discovery.

Even though she is only an apprentice, Alvie is an inventor at heart, and she is determined to make as many discoveries - in as short a time frame - as she can. Luckily for her, she’s studying under the world-renowned magician Marion Praff, who is just as dedicated as Alvie is.

Alvie’s enthusiasm reinvigorates her mentor’s work, and together they create a device that could forever change Polymaking - and the world. But when a rival learns of their plans, he conspires to steal their invention and take the credit for it himself.

To thwart him, Alvie will need to think one step ahead. For in the high-stakes world of magical discovery, not everyone plays fair…

Dying for more

This series is amazing I love this story can't wait for more. Alvie is so relatable to me I love her instantly. My glasses are constantly slipping and getting knocked off and also clueless in love. I hope that a sequel is coming soon. The voice actress was wonderful I got very into the story.

Excellent

Excellent follow up to the paper magician books. I really appreciated that she brought back old characters to see their progress in life.

Amazing

I got this without reading the description as I've listened to the rest of the magician novels (paper, glass, & master). I was surprised to find that it wasn't a continuation and more of a side line. The book did an amazing job of fleshing out the magician universe. It was very interesting to see both the "real" industrial works and magic. And this book did wonders at combining the two in a very sensible manor. The narrator is great, and I found her voice less grating than the first 3. If you enjoyed the first 3, you'll enjoy this one as well.

Nicely Paced Story

I really enjoy Charlie Holmberg's writing and this particular series. I think it is a fun, engaging take on magic. I like that she keeps the stories sweet and more realistic to what I know. I like the setting and all the twists.

I would recommend this series. I would also listen to other stories done by Sarah Zimmerman.

Kindred Spirit

So much of Alvie reminded me of myself, I loved her! She was very relatable with her quirkiness and awkward charm.

I am a huge fan of the Paper Magician series, and was excited when I saw this book was coming out! It can be read as a stand alone; however, I found it weirdly entertaining, as if I were in on a secret, when characters from the trilogy would surface in Alvie's story. Charlie has created a charming universe, and I hope she continues to explore it.

The performance was also really great! I listened at 1.5x speed, so it wasn't completely as it was designed, but I felt like the voice actor did a great job bringing it all to life.

just ok

This is not as exciting or innovative as the preceding books. The first half of the story is tediously slow and boring.

Best in the series!

I loved the paper magician series but enjoyed this even more. I really enjoyed such an intelligent female lead character. The story flows well and I love the magic system in this alternate world. So far this is my favorite of Holmbergs books, and I absolutely can't wait to read more!

Another great Holmberg Book

I very much enjoyed the 3 books in Holmberg's Paper Magician series and The Plastic Magician was just as good. I really like following these characters and their magical lives. I love how the author gives such strength and intelligence to these women during a time when women were so extremely underestimated and under appreciated. I hope this series will continue! I'm ready for the next story.

a great expansion to the original storyline

The theme of this book centered around the idea of blossoming knowledge. The main apprentice in this book has grown up during an exciting time in America, and she studies a new discipline on the frontier of magical possibilities. Like her craft, the romantic prospects for the apprentices in this book are fresh and new and the author explores their relationship gently, as two young people would in the time and place of this story. I really enjoyed this new entry to the series and can't wait to see how the story, and the magic, develops in the next book in the series. And for those of you who loved the characters in the earlier books, don't worry - they haven't been forgotten and I can see how their story might intertwine with the new characters in upcoming books.

Fun and Light Story with Intriguing World—Building

The world is intriguing—magicians who use plastic, paper, glass, etc! Very cool concept. Plus, the idea that you can “patent” a magical formula or discover it. The story provides intrigue, a bit of romance, and the journey of a young woman toward her independence. It was an easy “read” and fun to listen to.
