Story
Fourteen-year-old Nephele used to have friends. Well, she had a friend. That friend made the adjustment to high school easily, leaving Nephele behind in the process. And as Nephele looks ahead, all she can see is three very lonely years. Nephele is also a whip-smart lover of math and science, so she makes a plan. Step one: invent time travel. Step two: go back in time, have a do-over of ninth grade, crack the code on making friends, and become beloved and popular. Does it work? Sort of. Nephele does travel through time, but not the way she planned - she’s created a time loop.

My name is Hope Arden, and you won't know who I am. But we've met before—a thousand times. It started when I was 16 years old. A father forgetting to drive me to school. A mother setting the table for three, not four. A friend who looks at me and sees a stranger. No matter what I do, the words I say, the crimes I commit, you will never remember who I am. That makes my life difficult. It also makes me dangerous. The Sudden Appearance of Hope is a riveting and heartbreaking exploration of identity and existence, about a forgotten girl whose story will stay with you forever.

Publisher's Summary
In 1967, four female scientists worked together to build the world’s first time machine. But just as they are about to debut their creation, one of them suffers a breakdown, putting the whole project - and future of time travel - in jeopardy. To protect their invention, one member is exiled from the team - erasing her contributions from history.
Fifty years later, time travel is a big business. Twenty-something Ruby Rebello knows her beloved grandmother Granny Bee was one of the pioneers, though no one will tell her more. But when Bee receives a mysterious newspaper clipping from the future reporting the murder of an unidentified woman, Ruby becomes obsessed: could it be Bee? Who would want her dead? And most importantly of all: can her murder be stopped?
Traversing the decades and told from alternating perspectives, The Psychology of Time Travel introduces a fabulous new voice in fiction and a new must-listen for fans of speculative fiction and women’s fiction alike.

Lesbian time travelers!
Female-centric sci-fi with lesbians, time travelers, and POC. Amazing. This must be what straight, white men feel with every other book.
The story is a solid 4 but I gave it 5 because I have never read a sci-fi with so many female characters. It revolves around the granddaughter of a founding time traveler. It’s mostly a murder mystery in a time travel setting with a bit of psychology and romance thrown in. Worth the listen.

Surprised by not being surprised
I am notorious for figuring out the killer in mystery books and movies, and this book was no different. No spoilers here but I knew from very early on who did it. The surprising part of the experience was how enjoyable it was and how many other surprises delighted me. Definitely recommend.

Time Travel, Love & Murder
Mascarenhas is quick to get the story started. Within the first three chapters you're attention has been captured. Time travel exists, a murder has been committed and love has many grey areas.
The descriptions provide such imagery that you can vividly place yourself at the scene. Not only was I able to picture the scene in precise detail, but at one point I could even smell the scene.
This past, present and future murder mystery is truly a poetic one. Though I was able to solve the mystery, I appreciated the clever twists and a debunked suspicion. In the end, everything comes together and nothing is left unanswered.

TOP NOTCH time travel murder mystery! the worldbuilding is spectacular and the interwoven story will keep you hooked
every so often i found myself thinking ‘wait who is this?’ after a pov shift, but the narrative is great about subtly reminding you which plot thread is being picked back up. and it all comes together in such interesting ways
performance is great as well
cannot believe this gem has just been sitting here since april 2020 and i only found it by browsing audible randomly. this should be a top recommendation in the kinds of circles i frequent (gay feminism scifi/fantasy readers)

One to watch!
This novel hit so many of my sweet spots, it was just a joy to read. I didn't have any expectations going in but was tremendously pleasantly surprised, especially considering I usually avoid time-travel-plots like the plague.
I was so disappointed when I discovered that this author hadn't published more. I'll definitely be keeping tabs on her in the future!

WHY'D IT HAVE TO END!
This was a mystery I could read over and over again. I just wish there are more books like it. If there is, someone please let me know. I loved all the characters except for one, Margaret, and Grace was my absolute favorite. The idea of traveling back and forth through time is thrilling, but to do so to solve a murder made it that much better. I'm not giving up any details about it either. This is just a really great book that I highly suggest you dive into if, you're thinking about it, and you are clearly thinking about it because you're reading my review.😁 ENJOY!

Fast-paced, creative, engrossing. Get the audiobook!
The author’s imagining of the different social structures & mental states that spring from time travel is fascinating! The love story & the ending overall is quite satisfying. Get the audiobook— the voice actress does a splendid job of switching between disparate UK/European accents. Her reading is masterful. Highly recommend!

Confusing
Time travel stories are one of my favorite genres. i don’t know know if the fact that i was confused was me or the book. I suppose actually reading it would have made keeping track of the dates easier and possibly how everyone was related. It did however have a clever conclusion.

A New Favorite!
Where to start??? I love the absolute psychology of the book- delving into characters development and more. This book makes me think of parts work (see Internal Family Systems or your nearest up-to-date therapist). The women characters (which are the major the characters) are human AND strong. They have flaws, they love, they murder, they make up- they meet themselves…. Just go read it already! This is gratefully on my favorites list.
