About this listen

Engaging and fast-paced, this gripping coming-of-age novel of chess, feminism, and addiction speeds to a conclusion as elegant and satisfying as a mate in four.

Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control.

By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

I read the reviews about the narrator being horrible but I strongly believe she was perfect for this story. She was the mind of Elizabeth and a wonderful performance. This story was also incredible and amazing his closely the show stuck to it.

The narrator was perfect.

I almost gave up early on, but I decided to stick it out. The story itself was well worth listening to, but the narrator made it almost unbearable at times. She loses some of her breathiness near the middle of the story, but whenever she switches to a male voice or assumes an accent, she takes you right out of the story, and you simply have to endure it until she is done. It’s too bad because the story is compelling and the characters draw you in. I would have thoroughly enjoyed it but for the performance.

The Narrator though

I saw the Netflix series first & loved it. It was quite gruelling to get to the end of this . I wonder if a different narrator would have made this as as enjoyable as Netflix.

Story is great, narration is mediocre

Overall loved the book. The author makes “boring chess” absolutely riveting. I didn’t love the narrator at first but she grew on me and a few chapters in I was hooked. Wish there was a sequel !

Fascinating. Wish it was a true story

I loved the story and how it played out. The voice of the narrator was not my favourite. A was close to quitting the listening as her voice was annoying me. I’m glad I stuck it out.

Great story

Good story, but the author could've spent more time on character development instead of the in depth chess moves.

great narrator, but story lacked depth
