Hugh van Cuylenburg was a primary school teacher volunteering in northern India when he had a life-changing realisation: despite the underprivileged community the children were from, they were remarkably positive.

By contrast, back in Australia Hugh knew that all too many people found it hard to be happy, or suffered from mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. His own little sister had been ravaged by anorexia nervosa.

He set about finding the answer and in time identified three pivotal traits - gratitude, empathy, and mindfulness - which seemed to underpin the children's resilience.

Compelling Stories, Needs Better Tie to Resilience

The stories van Cuylenberg tells from his life are funny, dark, relatable, and poignant. He has undoubtedly led an interesting life, and had been fortunate enough to appreciate others' resilience, as well as understand the power of gratitude.

However, I find that there could have been more analysis of his stories, to tie them into prevailing studies, research, or theories. This book felt like I was meeting up with a good friend to talk about personal experiences of resilience, instead of an authority on the subject.

I'd like for van Cuylenberg to have seized the teachable moments, but overall, it's at least an entertaining listen to a very likable author.

Amazing

I absolutely loved this book. Hugh Van Cuylenburg had me glued to the book on the first page... thank you for starting the Resilience project and sharing it with the world. I totally recommend this book.
