Publisher's Summary

Modern culture is obsessed with identity.

Since the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision in 2015, sexual identity has dominated both public discourse and cultural trends — yet no historical phenomenon is its own cause. From Augustine to Marx, various views and perspectives have contributed to the modern understanding of the self.

In this timely audiobook, Carl Trueman analyzes the development of the sexual revolution as a symptom — rather than the cause — of the human search for identity. Trueman surveys the past, brings clarity to the present, and gives guidance for the future as Christians navigate the culture in humanity’s ever-changing quest for identity.

Great Content, Tough Listen

This is a book filled with great content and thought provoking perspectives and insights.

It is a very verbose and at times dense read. Rather textbookish.

How did the West become the most confused and divided culture in human history?

The above title is my pondering, not the author’s. However, the author compellingly provides an historical perspective that helped me to understand the answer to my question like I had never understood it before!

If you struggle with the chaos of this world, especially, in the west, this book will be very, very helpful!

A must-read to understand the origin of contemporary sexual norms and societal shift away from traditional morality.

This is a detailed, scholarly analysis of how we have become a “woke” western world. It takes the reader through a review of the major influencers of thought since the Enlightenment and explains how the various forms of individuals sexual identity have come together into the LGBTQ+ coalition. Not light reading—but extremely thought-provoking and enlightening!
