Story
Have you ever desired, deep within your soul, to make a comfortable full-time living from a farming enterprise? Too often people dare not even vocalize this desire because it seems absurd. It's like thinking the unthinkable. After all, the farm population is dwindling. It takes too much capital to start. The pay is too low. The working conditions are dusty, smelly and noisy: Not the place to raise a family. This is all true, and more, for most farmers.

A couple working six months per year for 50 hours per week on 20 acres can net $25,000 to $30,000 per year with an investment equivalent to the price of one new medium-sized tractor. Seldom has agriculture held out such a plum. In a day when mainline farm experts predict the continued demise of the family farm, the pastured poultry opportunity shines like a beacon in the night, guiding the way to a brighter future.

Story
Fossil fuels and livestock grazing are often targeted as major culprits behind climate change and desertification. But Allan Savory, cofounder of the Savory Institute, begs to differ. The bigger problem, he warns, is our mismanagement of resources. Livestock grazing is not the problem; it's how we graze livestock. If we don't change the way we approach land management, irreparable harm from climate change could continue long after we replace fossil fuels.

There is also a history of no-dig vegetable gardening in the last 100 years. I want listeners to understand the context and the reasons why no dig has not been much valued until recently, and why it is now. This audiobook has 18 sections, covering the key methods and wonderful results of no dig, from starting with weeds to sowing and planting straightaway, and cropping soon after.

Montgomery introduces us to farmers around the world at the heart of a brewing soil health revolution that could bring humanity's ailing soil back to life remarkably fast.

Since its publication in 1977, The Unsettling of America has been recognized as a classic of American letters. In it, Wendell Berry argues that good farming is a cultural and spiritual discipline. Today’s agribusiness, however, takes farming out of its cultural context and away from families. As a result, we as a nation are more estranged from the land - from the intimate knowledge, love, and care of it.

Given that the author has no medical experience, it's highly inappropriate to discuss vaccinations of animals in a book about growing food.

A very basic preview of modern homesteading.
I personally found the book very lacking of new content or moderate and advanced ideas. The underlying message of the book is that wherever you are and whoever you are, you can start growing some of your own food, but it doesn’t read like a book from Eric Coleman, or Joel Salatin in which it goes into depth about how this is done.

Inspiring
This book helped me get through a tough stage of gardening burn out. A great book for beginners but also very inspiring for advanced homesteaders, it reminded me why we do this in a time I needed it most. I hardly have time to sit and read a hard cover book but Justin's audiobook version made it unique and memorable, only took a couple of days listening to it during chores and housework. I love the way he can tell a story. 10/10 recommend.

This Book!
This Book, came straight as an answer to prayer :) I prayed 10 months ago to find true wholeness for our family and God has been taking me on a journey. A big part of that was not being vegan anymore (after 6 years) it really was a struggle but long story short I see how the truths in this book would have never been able to take root had I been holding on to my preconceived ideas of “health”. Thank you Justin for your honesty, transparency and humor in sharing your families journey. It really has come at the perfect time for my family, may God continue to use you in such beautiful ways for His glory!

Packed full of resourceful information as well as heartwarming and humorous stories
This book is full of good information and breaks down the how-tos of gardening and homesteading my husband has failed to be able to articulate to me. I found many parts of the book inspiring, and found that the last two chapters about family life and focusing on relationships were exactly what my soul needed to hear right now. It would have been worth the purchase for those few chapters alone, and I would highly recommend to anyone with a growing family wanting to try to begin homesteading and growing your own food.
