Publisher's Summary

"Who is this man, this Scarlet Pimpernel?" Each day this question grew more pressing to the leaders of the French Revolution. Only this man and his band of followers threatened their total power. Only this maddeningly elusive figure defied the vast network of fanatics, informers, and secret agents that the Revolution spread out to catch its enemies.

Some said this man of many disguises, endless ruses, and infinite daring was an exiled French nobleman, returned to wreak vengeance. Others said he was an English lord, seeking sheer adventure and supreme sport in playing the most dangerous game of all. But of only one thing could those who sought him be sure. They knew all too well the symbol of his presence: the blood-red flower known as the Scarlet Pimpernel.

What the critics say

"A swashbuckling adventure tale of epic proportions...an exciting, fast-paced story." (Large Print Reviews)
"Arguably the best adventure story ever published, and certainly the most influential that appeared during the early decades of the 20th century." (Gary Hoppenstand)

Will listen again

Captivating. Intense. Colourful. Whimsical. And even better because of the setting of for-real events. The reader is brilliant. Best we’ve ever heard. His ability to toggle from one voice and accent to the next is impressive and not only helps you more easily follow the characters but also enhances the environment of the storytelling. Well done!

A great adventure

A fun adventure . I was not surprised at the identity of the Scarlet Pimpernel, but the lead up to his unveiling was a great part of this novel. Published in 1905, but set during the time of the French Revolution. We are swept along in the great and romantic adventure. Enjoyable narration. A full 5 stars.

Adventure, History, and Romance

I've always loved this book. The daring, humour, intelligence, and heartache during a horrific time in history.
The voice actor does a great job of bringing this masterpiece to life.

Good story and narration

A warning for the casual anti-Semitism in this book, but the story is really fun and Marguerite makes for a believable character.
The narrator does accents for all the characters, which could be distracting for some people. I didn't mind them and was relieved that he didn't fake a weird voice for the female characters.

Not an interesting book

I was quite disappointed especially since I had read a very different book years ago and wanted the same again.
